Music Suggestion Needed (Big Band)

I want to try some "new" music. I like the old Glenn Miller/Les Brown big band sound, but don't like the crappy recordings you get due to the poor fidelity masters they use for "War Years Hits" CDs, and such.

Who is a MODERN big band that has good recordings of old standards?

Thanks

A few that I'm aware of:

    Big Band Style:

    Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band
    BBC Big Band
    GRP All-Star Big Band

    Dixieland (revival) Style:

    Pete Fountain
    Preservation Hall Jazz Band
    Al Hirt

might want to give Jaco Pastorius a try. Stuf he did with his "Word of Mouth" big band was friggen awesome.

    try these albums

    Word of Mouth
    The Birthday Concert
    Invitation

(the last 2 are the live albums, and in my opinion superior to the studio effort)

the Birthday Concert and Invitation get alot of spin time in my rig.

The band's performance in "invitation" seems a skosh better then the Birthday Concert, but I like the overall sound of the Birthday Concert better. seemed like a smaller venue, where Invitation was a big concert in Japan I believe. If you like one though, you have to try the other

Give your ears and perception a working over and get yourself some Brian Setzer Orchestra CD's. His first self titled one is the most traditional with the most covers of old tunes on it.

    Cheers,

The Buddy Rich Big Band - Big Swing Face
The Buddy Rich Big Band - Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

Those were recorded live, and the recording jobs are superlative. You'd be hard pressed to find a better sounding or more highly motivated big band. For proof of this, find the recording on the internet of Buddy giving one of his bands a "pep talk" on the tour bus during the intermission at a show. Before it's all over he threatens to LEAVE THEM THERE and ride the bus home alone if they don't get their **** together during the second half.

George Benson & The Count Basie Orchestra - Big Boss Band (dynamite recording)

Maynard Ferguson - MF Horn, and MF Horn II

The Glenn Miller Band was really what was called a "sweet" band and maybe almost a "society" band, never really stretching out with solos and stuff like that. Just sugar sweet stuff that puts me to sleep. Les Brown & His Band of Reknown is a whole different story.

    Amen.

For what it's worth, when both MF and BR's bands were still touring in the 70's and early 80's, Buddy's was the Maserati zipping in and out of traffic and Maynard's was a Cadillac touring machine. Both ultimately listenable.
