How to use Speaker Serial Numbers?

Hello,

How does one usefully use speaker serial numbers to gauge the age of a speaker. Is there a database of serial numbers that coincide with yearly models? Where might this be?

Im trying to look up a LSiC with the serial number of 02449 and to double check its age. Breaking the serial number into 02/44/9, 02/4/49 doesnt make any sense so Im doubting this gives any date specific information without knowing serial numbers for a particular production year.

Thanks ... believe it or not Im am slowly learning from all the posts from others and the answers to my posts!!

You may want to contact Polk customer service to see if the date of manufacture is coded in the serial. Click the support link above. Polk CS is excellent

    Good luck

My bet is that it's just sequential, but even if it is,Polk might be able to give a reasonable estimate on the build date. Why is the build date important? Were there revisions to the design?

    Sorry for the useless post.

Nothing to be sorry about. I noted a dispute on Audiogon between a seller who claimed the speakers were 7 years old and when the buyer verified the age using the serial numbers on the speakers they turned out to be 13 years old in fact. The dispute in question was NOT regarding Polk equipment by the way.

Im not doubting the seller by any means just trying to learn how to use serial numbers as a possible helpful tool in purchasing used equipment. I figured that some people may use this technique to investigate equipment, perhaps Im wrong? Thats all.

It's interested me how often serial numbers are not sequential and how people make a big deal when they are----I guess to prove they really are a matched set....Out of my ten pairs of speakers, I think one has sequential numbers. I gather that as they roll off the assembly line, they get put into boxes in no particular order. Of course, this is a big issue if you have a designated right and left channel, eh?

Try posting a picture. That may help. Polk used stick on tags on some models & over time they fell off.... Take picture of binders on back also. Note if Blade/Blade or Pin/Blade socket for IC cord

    Pictures without grills on
    SDA 2
    SDA 2a
    SDA 2b
    SDA SRS 2
    Are all SDA 2
Can you see our confusion with
"they look kinda like SDA 2's" ?
