Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player

I have a Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player. For months, it's worked perfectly in my bedroom setup. However, last week it started to skip badly while watching an older DVD. I thought it was probably just scratches on the DVD and didn't worry about it too much.
Then, last night, another disc (practically brand new) started to skip, then just froze. I pulled out my 3M / Scotch laser cleaning disc and started it up thinking the lense was dirty. Wouldn't you know, ironically enough, the cleaning disc skipped, then froze.
I tried several other discs. All played okay at first, then started to skip every few seconds, then eventually froze.
Any thoughts? Is there a firmware update for the HD-A2 I should be on the lookout for?

I'm trying to download the firmware to see if that helps. If anyone has experience with the downloaded firmware (copied to CD or hooking player up directly to internet), please let me know.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Are you having trouble with the update? I had an A2 for about 2 weeks and down loaded the updates straight to the player via ethernet port with out any problems, there are a couple of setting in the player that you have to make sure are on before it would work though.Casey

I'll try hooking it up to my internet this evening. Does the latest firmware version automatically load to the player once you go to "maintenance / update?"
Honestly, I didn't have a free ethernet cord lying around to do it last night. I'm pretty much totally wireless these days. 2 years ago, I had about 10 ethernet cords, the world is changing so fastStereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Pretty much, it will ask a couple of question, like if your sure you want to update the player, but then it sould connect and start downloading the update, if you have it set up right.Casey

Can anyone confirm that the firmware update helps with skipping, pausing, freezing? It's weird that it never did this even once until a few nights ago.
Hopefully, firmware fixes it, but I'm quite skeptical.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Actually, I do also have a XA1 and need to update that firmware, too. Got the HD-A2 updated this evening successfully, but haven't had a chance to test it out yet to see if it helped my skipping issues.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Update worked, but didn't solve my stutter / freeze issues. Discs are now unwatchable.
Anyone have experience getting a toshiba HD-DVD player repaired / replaced under warranty? What is the process? How long does it take?
Any advice is very welcomed.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

Man, I hope mine doesn't do this, otherwise it is getting set on fire like Sid's old Xbox....

I have my XA1 service by Toshiba, problems of the player is same like yours (stutter and freeze). Right now it's all working fine since then, my player is about 8 mos. old and haven't had any issue.
If your HD-DVD player is still under warranty I suppose, please call toshiba customer service and they will give you direction on how to send it to Toshiba repair center. The repair will take close to 2 wks. and asked them to give you free shipping.
Hope this helps. -

Thanks for the tips. I'll call Toshiba customer service tomorrow, if possible. I emailed them a couple times with the issue and instructions for return/repair. Three days with no answer. Nice CS!
Two weeks doesn't sound bad at all, especially if all I have to pay is shipping one way. I feel leveraging the fact that I own two HD-DVD players from them will help.Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand

I do not have the receipt for my HD-A2. Got it for about $200 off Craigslist like NIB with 4 free HD-DVDs when they were still selling for $400 - $500 in stores; seems like an awesome deal at the time, but not nowStereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand
