Mt. Marathon race in Seward Alaska

Every July 4th, my town of Seward Alaska hosts a huge 4th of July celebration in which this small town of 3500 swells to over 30,000. Along with the celebration, there is a race in which 350 women and 350 men (in sperate races) run from downtown Seward (elevation 30ft.) to the top of Mt. Marathon (elevation 3022 ft.) and back. This year was the 80th official running of the race. It was also my first year running it. I finished in 1 hour and 28 minutes. The winner of the mens race did it in 46 minutes! It's pretty much a consistent 40 degree grade until the summit and a mad dash down the mountain with a short run on pavement back to town. Even though I finished 228th out of 350, I feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment. If your ever in Alaska in July, you should come on down to Seward and experience the 4th!!

Glad to hear you finished what seems like a very hard race. Iwould not be able to do it in the shape i'm in but am working on getting in better shape. One of these days I want to go to Alaska and check it out. Always been one of the top places that i want to visit.
