Took a little trip today and came home with some new toys. First is a Heathkit AP-1615 preamp. Late '70s vintage solid-state, fairly unremarkable unit, nice to have though.

The real fun is the matching Heath AA-1640 power amp that came with it. It's a mammoth beast, nearly 20" square, around 60 pounds, and bristling with gigantic heatsinks. 200W per channel rated, but I've heard they would test at close to 300W wide open. Great big transformer, filter capacitors the size of beer cans, all rolled into a package that's designed to be roomy and easy to service. Needs some electronic TLC but it's otherwise near mint.

A lot of people think of Heath as just a company that made gadgets for tinkerers. They forget that they also made some serious hi-fi hardware, at a good cost savings too. This baby should provide a stable base to build my system around for years to come.

    Ugh...
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

That's what it looks like. Actually, that's the exact one I got. Already have a Phase Linear and an Adcom, but this is a great deal more rugged and better laid out.

My first stereo gear was a birthday present from my folks, a Heathkit in kit form that I had to assemble. Cool stuff.

Both this and the preamp were assembled by the previous owner. Looks like he knew his stuff, no newbie soldering goofs. The design is quite good, all the internal components come out on cards or modules for easy servicing. Also has a comprehensive speaker protection circut and a main power relay to avoid long AC runs to the front panel switch.
