I have a chance to buy these, are they worth the $125 asking price in good condition? what are the pluses and minuses of planar speakers like these? I understand it's a dipole speaker.. what else should I know? They are not close to me.. so if I make the 4 hour trip to hear these.. i want to be dang sure i would want these first.
should I pass and wait for something else?

Yes they just disappear like they aren't there at all.
doro knows as much about these as anyone I think.
My 1.6qr's are finicky. They have to be a certain distance from the wall to sound good. When I first got them, the only thing that turned me on about them was playing vinyl through them and jazz or classical sounds the best. They aren't rock and roll speakers I've heard and I tend to agree. They need alot of power like the amazings. I've added a tube pre- to them and like what I'm hearing and I plan on keeping mine. It's been fun tinkering with them to get them sounding good. -
I don't mess with the little ones anymore, as it's pointless but that's just me. Magnepan loudspeakers have never been any trouble to set-up as long as you're aware of how they radiate and that the sweet spot is smaller than a traditional monkey coffin.
I've owned about 7 pairs of the "smaller" ones and I always go back to the big ones. The bar starts at 3.3R for me. I personally wouldn't drive 4 hours to see an MG1 but they do sound good and at least you can demo them in person. That's a big deal with planar speakers.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
