I came across this ad in a local website
"Nikko "Alpha" 440 power amp, and Paradigm Monitor 9 loudspeakers for sale. Amp is 800 Watts a side, and could possibly break windows! Serious inquiries only. Set for $600 firm"
has anyone heard of Nikko, I found some info on a 220 but no 440?

I had a Nikko amp many years ago, it was ok. But the 440 is 200 watts a channel, not 800. Current value is probably around $100. They were not very expensive when new, I think I paid $200 for mine new.
You can look up specs here:

It's been over 20 years Jim, I don't really remember what it sounded like. I know I didn't keep it long though, didn't seem to have the power claimed.

Nikko separates were fairly well regarded when they were current. I haven't had the pleasure, but look forward to an opportunity.

I've had an Alpha 230 for several years (with matching pre and tuner), now doing duty in the kid's "jukebox" rig. Nikko made solid gear and the Alpha series amps are much beloved by party DJs for their high current output and durability.

Not bad.

I wasn't to terribly impressed with the Nikko Alpha 3. "Stale" would sum it up.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

BlueMD is absolutely correct. Many moons ago I used a black version of the Nikko Alpha II power amp and matching pre-amp with a couple of turn tables and a pair of big old speaker blocks when I used to dj. I believe the power outputs on these Nikko Amps are conservatively rated to be truthful. They are very good value for money both sound and build quality. Cannot complain. I cannot knock them for their period then or today. Of course they are no "Jeff Rowland", "Bryston" or "Pass Labs" but they nice sounding amps.
Currently I have a barely used Denon POA2800 amp rated at 200wpc and looking to switch to monoblocks however I have very fond memories of the old Alpha II which is of much better build quality then my current Denon. -
I had a Nikko Alpha VI (manuf. 1980) a true dual mono design awhile back & it was superb! That particular model was designed & built by Luxman for Nikko. Up until that point Nikko was pretty much known for mid-fi gear. This was Nikko's move into the big leagues & they were tremendous amps. In today's dollars the amp would have a price tag of approx. $3400.00. I had it for quite some time & then went to my current Rotel 5 channel amp. I sold the Nikko for $800.00 & it went in a hurry at that price. The model you're looking at is also a great amp. Do some research & see if it too was designed & built by Luxman, & if it was I'd jump on it. Do a search here because I have a thread w/ pics on the Alpha VI.
