bought both open box: TV for $1400 (with tax) and Yamaha for $435 (with tax)

i have questions on how to hook things up. i have Digital Comcast box w/ DVI/Optical out, i have Media Storage Device w/ DVI/Optical out, i have HDMI DVD Player

the receiver only has 2 HDMI inputs and 0 DVI, and 1080p compatible HDMI, high-definition video up-conversion, and de-interlacing (480i to 480p)

so what should i run through the receiver and whats going to TV.....assuming i will buy 2 DVI-to-HDMI adapters ?

Thanks.

EDIT: I THINK I GOT IT

How do you like your Westy? I just got the 42" one last week. I can't say I am all that happy with it except for the price - $1149. It doesn't have very good black levels or shadow detail. It's not horrible, but it is noticeable.

I went back to BB thinking I might want to exchange it and spend more. I just stood and watched from set to set for a pretty long time. What I saw was that during commercial pauses in their feed, all the sets went black except the Westinghouse units which all had a faint glow. I think this is what kills black levels and there is no way to adjust it out.

I think I'll prolly end up keeping it anyway tho.

not really an expert here, but i like it. I calibrated it, dropped backlight to 10-20%......but for the price i paid, i don't even care if it's the best or not. its certainly not 50-60% worth then top of the line Sony that cost what about 3k. and Westy has good reviews too.

Yeah, I'm pretty much with you on this. I thought about exchanging for a unit with better blacks. From the research I have done, both Sony and Samsung have much bigger problems than poor black performance. Sony is a crapshoot when it comes to getting a set that doesn't have clouding issues. Samsung has chronic HDMI issues with sporadic audio and video dropouts, and many people are having banding issues and clouding problems. The Westinghouses do not seem to have any of these issues.

I think they made a trade-off. They used a thicker, more solid screen that doesn't have issues with uneven light distribution, which in turn causes the screen to slightly glow, which hurts black level and narrows the viewing angle.

The color on mine is spectacular once I adjusted correctly.

I would say hook up your TV via component as no TV shows are in 1080p. and neither is your DVD player.

Just got a Samsung HTP5054 using HDMI with no dropouts, I think this is overblown on message boards. I love my Sammy, it is crystal clear and has great black levels and color. Plus the sudio drop out shouldnt be concerned if youre just using it as a monitor and run sound thru a HT system as most here in the Polk forum are.

I've had great results with my Westinghouse 37" LCD for over a year. They do get decent reviews and hard very hard to compete against in a dollar to value contest. Mine kicked everything's ****, within a few hundred $$$s of what I paid at the time.

    Good luck and congrats.

Sounds like you have issues with the typical LCD black levels - why not look at some of the plasma panels or a DLP? LCDs are *super* for a brightly lit environment, but if you like to watch your movies in the dark then I'd look elsewhere.

heard that Olevia 747i is a top of the line TV on todays market due to its Reon HQV video chip.
