Which amp for my new bookshelves?

I recently picked up a pair of Cobalt 806s bookshelf speakers that replaced my Pok Monitor 40s, along with the matching sub (SW800s). These are of a higher quality than anything else in my setup, which includes...
-Onkyo TXSR-701 Receiver (which does have pre-outs)
-Onkyo DV-CP 702 6 disc DVD/CD player
-NAD 533 Turntable
-Xbox, PS2, Wii (27 and still gaming, though not as much anymore)
-JM Labs Sibs as rear speakers

I know that I need to upgrade my electronics to match the quality of my new speakers, and would appreciate suggestions on how to do so.

I do not want to lose the surround sound ability, and am contemplating adding a solid state amp for the bookshelves as an immediate upgrade. One day I may buy a pre-amp that can handle surround sound, but between their amazingly high cost and the continued format development, I am in no hurry.

After perusing various forums, I am getting the sense that I could do well with a used 2-channel amp in the sub-1000 range, but would like to know what people suggest. I would rather spend enough money now rather than having to upgrade later so that I can start saving for the pre-amp as well as upgrading interconnects, cables, etc. I feel an order to Blue Jean Cables coming soon...

Thank you for your time.
