Does anyone recommend or use glass platters? What are the pro's and con's? What type of platters are better?

Thanks,

? I guess you are talking about turntables. If so, off the top of my head, I think Rega and maybe Systemdek are the only ones that has glass platters. Glass may be a step above a solid aluminum platter, but composite platters are the best IMHO. I'm talking about layers of sandwiched materials like metal and acrylic. My VPI is lead and acrylic. Heavy, solid, but acoustically dead.

I was thinking the acrylic with lead was glass with lead. Thanks for the info.

Glass platters that I've seen are clear glass, nothing else. Look at some of the Regas. Its about 3/8" thick glass and thats it. You pretty much have to use a felt mat with those.

I really like acrylic because you don't need to use a mat and there is really no significant static buildup between the vinyl and acrylic.

So, if I had a chance to get a Glass Platter or a Acrylic Platter, you would choose the Acrylic. Am understanding this correctly?

You got it. Solid acrylic is one step up, acrylic/metal composite is another step up because it adds the weight that is needed to give it more inertia and stabilize the speed.

Don't know much about it but have read that the more the platter material matches the vinyl qualities the better. Glass and acrylic supposedly add their own character to the sound.

Well, I would think that the nice thing about glass is that it is an amorphous material, and thus pretty immune to the ringing resonances of a metallic platter. Oh, and it looks cool.

Many better tt's also use acrylic platters, though.

Interestingly, the Transcriptor Skeleton tt was all glass EXCEPT parts of the platter... but that was a long time ago now.

This reminds me that the Luxman turntable that sat in my garage for the last 20 years due to a tired belt that I couldn't find a replacement. This turbtanle has a glass platter, too.

IMHO glass sucks as TT platters. It is a horrible impedance match for vinyl and is a resonance machine.

When I was doing the R & D for my clamp, I came across a couple of glass platters . . . it was like clamping a record to a tuning fork. . .

:D:D:D Most of the record players ive owned have been like that. They sounded something like a cross between grinding glass and a cat being swung in circles by his tail at high speeds yowling all the way, with a high pitched hiss added for good measure.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

LOL. I have no idea of what digital glare may even be.

But if vinyl is really as good as people profess, its a shame that it isnt the most accepted format for music. people like the idea of easy though, and no matter how good vinyl may actually be, it will probally never be in everyones home and cars.

I am a lover of great sounding music and its probally a good thing that I dont know how good vinyl can sound. otherwise I may have to start collecting records and buying all new gear :D

Most people don't want to get out of a chair to flip the record? Favorite saying in FM is "Does it have a Remote".
