DVD upconversion??

I was looking at Oppo and other upconverting dvd p. My panasonic dvdp does this. But, it appears that upconversion is pretty limited. The oppo says it upgrades to 1080i, but then it says 480i with HDMI and maybe only 480i with component due to copyright issues. Since I only play purchased movie and concert DVDs (and actually my Sony HDTV with 1080i can do the upconversion), what does the Oppo or other upconverters actually upconvert to and through which outputs? Does it really help if the TV does upconversion?

I love how music can brighten up a bad day. -
I had the Oppo 970. It will upconvert to 480p, 720p, or 1080i over HDMI.
The reason they tout the 480i over HDMI is for people that use higher end external video scalers, and this output should give them the cleanest signal.
It will only upconvert to 480p with copyrighted material through component.
Sony TVs generally have very good internal scalers, having said that , I have a Sony Wega RP lcd, native resolution is 720p, I ran the oppo at 720p and it did improve the picture quality, YMMV -

Thanks...that clarifies a lot. There is so much buzz about the Oppo and the price is so right, I guess I will give one a try. -
I got mine at Amazon for $149 shipped. Took about 3 days even though they stated much longer.
