Also I like XFX cards.
Has anyone used component out for Video games?
How does it affect the card's performance

If you have the room and the extra $100, go with the 8800 GTS. You won't have to upgrade for quite a while. I've heard that there is no lack in performance on the 8800 when using components, but I haven't seen it first hand.
I know just enough to be dangerous, but don't tell my wife, she thinks I'm a genius. :D

    Pioneer VSX-816
    Monitor 40's - fronts, bi-amped
    Monitor 30's - surrounds
    CS1 - center
    PSW10 - I'll let you guess
Blue Jeans Cable - speaker cable
Daewoo 27 incher - one step up from a console
    Sony Progressive scan DVD
    XBOX

    SOPA since 2008
    Here's my stuff.

Edbert is right. I have the 8800GTX, but the GTS is very comparable at a better price. It will be worth the little extra money, especially when the new games come out that require higher-powered graphics cards.

edbert is right and you might want to go for the 8800 if possible or necessary because it will future proof you a bit more. Although it really depends on the games you play. I have a ATi X1900XT in my Mac and the two games I still play on the computer anymore, Half-Life 2 and Battlefield 2142, run at 2560x1600 resolution no problem. However, for newer games it definitely shows its age but I end up playing most all of my games in the living room on a console anyway.

Anyone use their PC on a projector. My projector is 480p, and I was thinking that a moderate video card as above would work well with a lower resolution via the component out.
Thanks for the input guys. I was leaning to the 8600 because of the DX10. Also I could SLI another if they still have them in about six months.

Out of the two, I'd pick the 1950 but you can find the XT for the same price or close for the Pro. 8800 GTS is a great card, I just upgraded my X1800XT to 8800 GTS Extreme (factory overclocked GTS). Doubled my PCMark 2006 score. HL2 runs at full resolution, highest detail at 200fps so it's definately a good upgrade. COD2 is finally playable at highest resolution (which is 1680x1050 for my monitor), getting 100fps or so. The 1800XT is very close to performance with the 1950Pro but 1950XT is much faster.

Budget less than $200, X1950XT. Less than $300, 8800 GTS.

What kind of monitor do you have to run it that high? CRT I assume, what brand/model?

No, that is a 16:10 widescreen ratio found in just about all 24" and 30" LCD widescreen monitors (and maybe a few 20" ones).

It is one bump up from 1680 x 1050 which I run my 20" Apple Cinema Display at.

Most contemporary Video cards (even low end) can run high res. I run 2 monitors on most of my stuff. At work right now my Optiplex has a little old ATI 1300 pro in it running 2 20" LCD;s at 1600X1200 each. I can fire up WoW on it in Window mode and get 40+ FPS.

At home I still have a 7800GTX (256MB) that’s runs 2 20” LCD’s at 1600X1200. I can actually switch it up to run 3200X1200 (both monitors as one) and still peg 60 fps.

You really don’t need an 8800GTX+ (ultra) unless you are seriously playing hard core games. Sli is just ridiculous really.

Your PC will sound like a damn vacuum cleaner when its on :)

Yeah I'm not really a big fan of Sli. 2 cards bridged does not equal one good card. It's kinda a price thing now, and I need a card. My old one needs to be replaced. I have a 6600 that chokes on fear, and doom3 when set to look pretty.

Actually the 8800GTS is very quiet card, while the X1800XT is very loud.

You can play games at decent framerate when you take out the details but I like to get the most out of the games so something like X1300XT won't cut it. WoW is kind on video cards but even BF2 puts something like that on its knees. COD2 and Oblivion are even worse, and the upcoming Crysis...

I can't wait for Crysis. I am a big fan of FarCry, and that is just the beginning of foliage starting to interact with game play:)

I actually reinstalled FarCry two days ago. It's a cool game but going back you realize how much the graphics have improved. I have rediscovered COD2 now that my video card can keep up with it, BF2 didn't change as much going from X1800XT. My friend had intergrated X1300 and couldn't play BF2 at all, he's now happy with my old X1800XT.

If you play games, get the 8800, it's definately worth the extra. Especially if you're drooling over Crysis.

I think I am going to wait until the reviews and benchmarks are out as to what can actually play Crysis well. Then I am going to build a computer from scratch that can be easily connected to my home theater system. Just thinking about essentially having that feeling of playing FarCry again for the first time, but on my HT gives me a chubby.

Thats the thing about Crysys. We have no idea what it will require. Bad drivers at first are probably going to kill us, and how much memory is going to be taken up in the video card too? Fear and Doom3 both have better graphics, but the landscape isn't as interactive.

Actually, the 23" Apple display and 24" LCDs have a 1920 x 1200 resolution. The Dell and Apple 30" displays have a native resolution of 2560 x 1600.
