This is by far the best rendition of Aqualung I've ever heard. Very, very dynamic and detailed. The vinyl is dead quiet. I compared it to the CD what a laugh. The CD was terrible beyond terrible, horrendous!

The only problem with Aqualung no matter what version you get is the tape hiss. Since I love analog so much I've become indifferent to the tape hiss. However it is there and can be distracting. BTW it is worse on the CD.

    That's why when I listen to vinyl...I always enjoy a nice bowl of Rice Krispies. It helps drown out the vinyl imperfections. Now hop on that time machine & dial in year 2007!!! :D

    Okay let's get down to brass tacks here. If your music on a your CD was recorded AAD you will most likely hear tape hiss. Unless all you CDs are DDD you will hear tape hiss in one manner or other. The CD of Aqualung that I have is a great example of a CD with pronounced tape hiss. . . so much for the hissssss lesssss digital front end. Then with DDD you get an unnatural, flat, unmusical recording . . . yuck I'll put up with vinyl's shortcomings any day.

    BTW Mike (msalla) may be coming down Sunday July 8th. I was going to send the word out to everyone.

    Phil I think you should bring your transport and DAC over to Joe's so we can read some reviews of some comparisons. I know that I am one interested party.:)

    Not from my discs, I run 'em thru the dish washer first. I figure if you guys can scrub & wash your vinyl then a spin in the dish washer will clean 'em up real good.

    Uh, did I mention that the Aqualung 200 gm LP sounded great? The album cover is a very nice textured material and the artworks seems more detailed than I remember the original. I gotta dig up the original and check it out too. How's the artwork on the CD? Oh yeah plastic and you have to read it with a microscope!!!

    I'm already working on the mini Polkfest. It looks like these three dates are the ones;

    Sunday July 8th, Mike (Msalla) might be coming down. Even if he can't, the house is open;

    Sunday July 15th, the house is open; and,

    Saturday July 21th, the house is open.

    Any or all three of those days the invite is out. I'm gonna send some emails and PMs to everyone I know who would be interested. I'll start a thread too.

    Count me in for one of those days as of right now. There is a possibility I may be interviewing for a job in NC and might have to take a trip.

    Joe,

    This actually sounds pretty good on factory recorded R2R, especially at 7 1/2. There is some tape hiss but I think it's as smooth and dynamic as the best vinyl I've heard. Better highs, smoother not as harsh. I think the dynamic range is about 10 dB better. Remember they had no vinyl mastering (metal molds, pressings, etc.) to "add" to the vinyl sound. It sounds wonderful on the Teac-X-2000 and the big Carvers. The 3 3/4 doesn't sound "as good" but still "enchanting"

    I want your R2R!!! That 10 db better DR is probably due to the lower noise at 7 1/2 ips vs. the slooooooow 3 3/4 ips. I wonder which master tapes they used to make these new 200 gram pressings. It is probably explained on the web somewhere. In any case, I'm glad I bought it. The drums are very very dynamic and pronounced. It actually has me jumping even though I know every note of that LP.

    Wow I just listened to this again using my Spectral's phono stage feeding the line stage of the VTL and it is amazing.

    Huge soundstage, very detailed images. Dead quiet.

    This is a really great hunk of vinyl.

    After seeing this thead I decided to sit down here and listen a record that I haven't listened to in a long time, J.T.'s Stormwatch, it may not be J.T.'s most popular recording but I am still enjoying having a listen. Jethro Tull sure had a very unique sound.
