A Tale of Two Turntables

Found an old Thorens and the seller let me borrow it to evaluate. In it's day, I believe it would have been a much nicer TT than my Technics. I'm not hearing much, if any, difference between the two. The Thorens is not as loud as the Technics with the volume set the same on the amp for both. Don't know what that means. Both pictured below fyi. I'd welcome any comments or suggestions for things to try during my 'tryout' period.

The volume output of the TT is directly dependent on the cartridge. Each cartridge has an output voltage, which dictates how much gain is needed to hear the music. Its really hard to compare two turntables unless they have the same cartridge. What is mounted on them? Thorens need to be carefully setup and leveled. Make sure the suspension isn't binding, the cable isn't binding and the platter isn't rubbing at all. Check out www.theanalogdept.com for useful info on setting up a Thorens.
