I have a modest system consisting of a Yamaha RX-V2500 receiver, Polk T90e (Monitor 60) mains, a CS2 center, and Monitor 30 surrounds, and a Paradigm Ultracube 10 sub. The DVD player i've been using for the past 2 years is a Toshiba SD-4900, which I think I might have paid $100 for.
I use my system for 60/40 movies/music. Today, just for kicks, I hooked up a 7 year old Yamaha S796 DVD player to my receiver using the analog inputs and played a few music CD's that i'd been playing on my Toshiba DVD. What a huge difference!
Now, the Yamaha S796 was a $400 player when new and I don't think it was cited for having particularly robust audio capabilities. But whatever the reason, there was a huge difference in the soundstage and the depth when played on the Yamaha vs. the Toshiba.
I've been looking around for a used Denon 3910 for a while, and i'm hopeful that will help even more.

I would check out a used Marantz DV-8300-8400 in addition to the the Denon...They are great players and very musical...I love my DV-8300, I thought about buying a dedicated CD player upstairs, but the DV-8300 outplayed anything I would audition in my price range...I don't know why Marantz killed the 8000 series players, they are truly incredible....
