No small RTis...

I have RTi 6's for front left and right, and an CSi30 that will soon be replaced with a CSi3 or CSi5. For the surrounds I have R15's propped on little wall-mounted stands. The R15's do the job of reproducing the sound of a bullet or helicopter moving from the front to the back during a DVD movie just fine to these old ears.

But I'm not sure how well they do when I'm playing a 2-channel CD on my Denon receiver, using Denon's matrix 5-channel DAP. I guess I'm not a 2-channel purist when it comes to music. The matrix mode sounds better to me than the 2-channel version of music.

But the R15's don't seem to be contributing a lot to the overall sound of Denon's matrix, but maybe that's the nature of the program. None of the RTi line could fit on my wall shelves...the RTi4's are too big. Should I accept what the R15's do as necessarily small speakers, or should I look into higher quality small bookshelf speakers made by manufacturers such as Paradigm?

For example, would Paradigm Atom speakers improve the overall sound of CDs played on my system in 5-channel, in comparison the the R15's? (I'm aware that having all speakers timber matched is desirable.)

Welcome to the club! I had a pair of R15's and they are a great little speaker. If I'm not mistaken the R15's are not timbre matched to the Rti series. In my experience, the rears are a supporting sound to the fronts in a 5 channel, not much more. I bet if you had separate amplification then it would be a different story. Are your rear levels set properly in your receiver?
IMO I'd stick w/the 15's if you can't get a larger speaker in there.
