This is hilariously funny.
NOPE
A playstation as good as a $6000 stand alone player. Almost blew snot out of my nose when I was reading that.
H9"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Differentiation by numbers is for those who do not".--Nelson Pass Pass Labs XA25 | EE Avant Pre | EE Mini Max Supreme DAC | MIT Shotgun S1 | Pangea AC14SE MKII | Legend L600 | BlueSound Node 3 - Tubes add soul! -
I looked into modding one for a while but just never found the incentive to do it. I own one of the older models (the most common / desired one to mod) and from all the articles I've read it *should* sound pretty good as-is, but it doesn't. In comparison to a $100 toshiba dvd player it sounded pretty bad. It was very bland and just had no dynamics to it, and this isn't to be confused with clean vs overdone + punchy, it just sucked. Imaging wasn't very good and it had no depth to it.
I guess it all depends on your individual setup and a bit of system syenergy, but it sure doesn't work well in my setup. I've read the article and gone back to a/b'ing that player a few times and I still find myself wondering what they're coming up with in this article.
Some guys on diyaudio.com got ahold of the playstations and modded them HERE -
I use one in my garage rig. It works great for that purpose, but I don't think I'd make it a centerpiece of my 2-ch system. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

i dont get this..... i remeber back with the original one came out (the one in question) and it was not to long after that they came out with version 2 becasue they had alot of problems due to the location of the laser assembly... you will notice that the laser is in a completley different location for the original release to all versions after

Aparently it uses a quality transport but it's located really close (nearly touching) the seperate power supply board so one of the best tweaks you can do to it is to pull the power supply and put it in a seperate box.

I think the best mod would be to thow it in the trash and get a real CD player. -
I remember when everyone was going crazy over the Toshiba 3950/3960s I went and bought one and did the opamp bypass mod on it. Now that was a player worth modding. The guy from Red Wine Audio came up with a PSU mod and opamp replacement mod, and from what I understand, the thing had the potential to sound as good as players costing thousands. I know that mine, with only an opamp bypass, sounded better than my NAD CDP I was using at the time.
This playstation thing, though... for some reason, I just don't see it being the same level. The "craze" hasn't really been in the audiophile circles at all, just some casual talk. The Toshiba had Audioasylum inundated with 3950 threads for weeks and weeks, it was crazy. Nothing like that has happened with the playstation. -

I had both versions and the 1st one had the analog conections and the 2nd one only had 1 pin type output that split into RCA's. The first version had occasional skipping problems that were solved if the unit was turned upsidedown. I had a friend who worked at a video game store and had all the 1st versions upsidedown.
As for the CD player claim, all of those who claim this said the the unit must be left on all the time to achieve the performance. Seems like a pain in the **** to me.
