A family film, thru and thru.

If you think this is a Fantasy, you've come to the wrong place... almost every fantasy aspect is shown in the previews... still, for a kids movie, it was extremely well done.

I was slightly disappointed, because I assumed it was more of a fantasy, than a kids movie, but regardless, it was touching. And believe it or not, the twist at the end had me almost in tears...

Besides that, a solid family film, very clean for the kids, with excellent acting. Zooey Deschanel has a small role, and that is always a good thing in my book :) The new girl, (AnnaSophia Robb - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) was extremely cute as well...

6 outta 10 stars here. If you want a nice slow drama, with kids in it, then it's a good rental. If you want a fantasy like "Lion witch and wardrobe" then you better pass... My 2 year old daughter loved it... so whatever that means.

Sounds like it's on the fantasy level of Pan's Labyrinth, so I'll pass.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

It's a kids movie for sure... I too was expecting more of a fantasy theme to it. For that it was kind of disappointing but still well done (for a ten year old audience).

I actually got asked if I were eligible for a childs admission (12 and under) when I went to see this movie in theaters. That's just painful. (I'm 19)

Not what I expected either. Definately more of a kid's movie. I was hoping for more fantasy. My nine year old was engrossed in the story. MrNightly's assessment is right on the money.

I really enjoyed this movie. The trailers made it look like a cheap Narnia rip-off, when in fact it was an extremely well done view of middle-school life, dealing with changes, etc. It actually made me nostalgic for my middle school years, which is hard to do! I'd give it a 9 / 10.

Exactly right...a poignant and extremely well acted and written children's tale which can appeal to most adults. You actually feel and wonder for the protagonists...brings back memories of childhood and parenthood. While all children under 12 will enjoy this film, what stands out is that most adults will as well. Very well done film...

I agree the reviews painted a different movie.

I wonder why the people behind that did it. I think more might have gone to the theater if we knew what a great storyline was to be heard. The special effects were at the end pretty much. I sat down expecting the effects to be all through it. And then the girl in the middle of the movie......

    No Narnia in this movie.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Kind of hard to sell a movie like this to the masses these days. It deals with somewhat complex and adult themes from a child's point of view. So although more adults might have seen it, you might have lost some of the children because parent's wouldn't have known what to expect if the ads were true to the material.

Which is too bad, 'cause the movie really is for both children and adults to enjoy. A movie that stands on story more than fx. Even if they are still there.

Something interesting for me was that it was filmed in New Zealand. But the movie was set in the rural US. Foreign studios are getting really good at making 'American' movies. Kick-**** is another film that comes to mind. Filmed in the UK to look like the urban US. Come to think of it, they're both coming of age stories that had good storylines with adult themes (although I definitely wouldn't take young ones to see KA). And they were marketed as somewhat opposite of what they were.

Maybe these foreign movies are a partial solution to steve's what's wrong thread...
