A bolt-action! There's something I would love to shoot one day. I played around with one in a store once, but never held an 'individually owned' model.

Besides having a greater capacity for accuracy, and I suppose being such a simple design that you could make really cheap bolt-action rifles, what's the real advantage of a bolt-action?

Bolt actions are notorious for accuracy, but they are not necessarily cheaper. This particular rifle was only $238, largely due to the small caliber--and it's a Savage, which are known for their incredible value. This one shoots a 17grain, .17 caliber bullet, in a rimfire case (like a .22); but at very high velocities of about 2600 fps. They have no kick, are extremely accurate, making them very fun to shoot--'cause nobody likes to miss....:D

iirc, high velocity rounds are something like 1200 or 1300 fps? Definitely not more than 1600 or so....I think....

Approx 1100 fps for a high velocity .22LR.

Hi-Vels should be getting more than that in a .22 LR.

    Most .22LR s are "hi-velocity", I think. Marketing hype?

Of course, the exceptions are .22 subsonics, as well as hyper-velocity

rounds, which I believe are capable of 1300fps+ (CCI Stingers come to mind).

My opinion here comes from handgun shooting, though, where typical fps' are

    lower.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Your run of the mill subsonic target loads would do around 1100 FPS. Hi-Vels will give and extra 100-200 FPS more. Hy-Vels will give you another 300 FPS more than the subsonic target loads.

I'm sure there is some marketing hype, but those categories are pretty well defined.

It's been a long time since I pulled out the ole .22.

The .17 HMR's are fun! I built a Marlin 917 into a nice little target/varmint rifle with the addition of a Revival Industries stock and Rifle Basix trigger and a little bedding with JB Weld. Have fun. If you haven't visited it, rimfire.com will feed your addiction!

Ditto that on the .22 .

Sure is fun being able to shoot for 3 or 4 hours and not bust a Jackson! ;)

We had a pretty cool outdoor range near me that I haven't been to in ages.

I think it's time for a visit to the "Sand Pit".

True. Typical standard velocity .22LR will be about 1000fps, high velocity about 1200 fps, and super high velocity (like CCI Stingers) about 1350 fps.

This of course is all approximates, and depend on barrel length.

No, the Hornet is a different beast. The .17 Hornet (Ackley) is a necked down version of the .22 hornet.
