What is the best order buying when starting a real 2 channel rig??

Speakers, power, components?

Whats happening right now is that my wife was offered a very good job in another city so we may be moving. So I figure sell all my equipment so we have less to move and then when we get there, just go with a nice 2 channel rig instead of a home theater for now.

Funny thing is that I just bought the house 2 months ago and its already going to be back on the market. The sales agent says that we can get 8000 more than what we paid cause the market in this town is so wild right now.

Also,

The town we are going to is alot bigger with more dealers for equipment, I might finally get those B&W speakers I want

You are confusing me Jim. Since you will be starting from scratch, you will need all components at the same time. Good luck with the sale of the house.

By the way, we are still pissed off at you for announcing that Polk was gonna reintroduce the SDA's!:p

LOL geez you guys hold a grudge,

Yeah I'm starting from scratch and what to know where I should start. I figure if I start with the power end I can build out from there, or should I start with a good speaker?

great speakers + average amp = fair music. Great amp + average speakers = fair music. Kind of a catch 22. If it were me, I'd buy the best new speakers I could afford and get a used quality amp to push 'em until I could get the amp of my dreams.

50% of your budject should go to the speakers.
    25% to the amplifier.
    15% to the preamp.
10% to the source (cd player, turntable, etc).
After you recover from your main purchases you should start all over.
    75% cables/interconnects.
    15% tweaks.
    10% music.
you may ask: Why only 10% for music? This amount should me allocated from your salary as a music tax for the sole purpose for buying music for life.

For me, personally, the source. I'd find the best source I could possibly get my ears on and start with that. A favorite saying of mine is..."You can't make chicken soup out of chicken ****." Think about that phrase for a while and how that phrase would be true in audio. It is always up to you, though.

Entertain the thought of a universal player, so that you can hear the benefits of SACD, if you don't already. Research into getting one that's good on both redbook and SACD.

    My 2 cents.......

If you start with the speaks, what are you going to drive them with? If you start with power what are you going to listen to it with?.

At the very min. you need power, pre, source, speaks and then cables to connect it all with. I don't understand your question?

Unless you are going to buy a piece at a time and stick it in a closet until you have everything. Even then, it doesn't matter what you buy first because you can't play it until it's all together.

It's like asking; I'm selling my old car so I need to get a new one, should I buy the tires or tranny or seats or steering wheel first? Then what's next.....

Nope. Each piece is as important as the next. The percentages are wha's off to me. Only 10% on a source? The pre and amp are essentially as important as the speaks.

75% on IC and cables when only 10% was spent on a source

I would get the best used amp I could afford. Later on, it will retain almost all of its value in case you change your direction. And, you can hook any crappy speaker and cd player up to it for the time being.

We are working with 100% of a given budject.
Not everyone can afford to spend $4000.00 on a source if their budject is $5 grand.

Besides, the source is always the 1st item to be replaced once upgradeitis sets in.
Once you start a new budject, you can always allocate 100% of the budject to a single item or break it down into percentages like i previously wrote.

So I take it you've done a full demo and this is what you have choosen? If you haven't really listened to this gear just be aware B & W is a like it or hate it kind of sound. Make sure and take your time and really figure out what sound you want. It will save many hassels and disappointemtns in the end.

    Funny...

This thread seems to be turning into a "chicken or the egg" debate.

What came first, the speakers or the power?

I guess everyone has their own ideas and methodology with this, but I purchased the speakers first. Then I defined what gear would result in the best synergy with those speakers from people who had experience with the speakers.

Chicken or the egg? Yes, this thread has a familiarity to it.

I was suggesting the source first, so that Jim could enjoy music on a pair of headphones while he built his system. Of course with a Rega Apollo, for example, he'd be screwed.

By the way, it was obviously the egg!

Hands down, buy the speakers first.

I'm not going to come out and say that one component is more important than another, 'cause it's all synergy. But your speakers have the biggest affect on the sound your system is going to make. Of course amps and pre's and sources affect the sound, but not as much as the speaker.

Why does that mean you should get the speaker first? Because of synergy. If you get an amp and pre first, then get your speaker that you auditioned forever and a day for an are in love with, who knows if they'll match up nicely?

Therefore, I say, listen to speaker after speaker after speaker, find out what it is you're looking for in music, what your emphasis is, buy a speaker based on that that appeases you, then go about choosing the amp, preamp, and source such that they all have great synergy.

    My .02, anyways.
