Totem Hawks

Rogue Audio Metis - pre

Bel Canto eVo 200.2 - Amp - I have the first two, but am deciding as to whether or not I need this to replace my NAD C272 (interested?). What are your candid thoughts on the proposed setup?

Thanks

No matter how good it may sound on paper, there is no way to know until you put it all together. Buy the Bel Canto (used if possible), keep the NAD till you try out the new amp then sell the one you least prefer.

The Hawks are a bit tough to drive at 6 ohms and a sensitivity of 86db...
both amps seem up to the task spec-wise, however.

How much do you have the Bel Canto lined up for?

edit: of course, Shack speaks wisely
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. I don't know how Bel Canto would match with this setup. From my own experience, Bel Canto amp is extreme quiet, but it sounds very edgy and dry. It is just me, but you might like this type of sound.

    Source?

If it's still the oppo I would get your source in line (or above) the rest of your equipment and then worry about upgrading your amp.

Fair enough . . . . I do still have the Oppo. I like the fact that it plays SACD and DVD-A. Any thoughts on a good Universal Player that would give me the sound of your Arcam :)

Forget the universal player, you have yet to reach the limits in performance of your regular CD's. I'm willing to bet a regular CD player in the same price range as a universal player will close the gap in sound quality between regular CD's and SACD/DVD-A. It's just not worth it in my opinion.

However if I were to pony up for a universal player, I'd have the McCormack UDP-1 at the top of my list. I love Steve McCormack's products.

    SolidSqual,
If I were in your shoes, I would also consider and external DAC. It would allow you to keep the flexibility of the Oppo (which has really good picture quality, right?) as well as upgrading the performance of your regular CD's. Just something else to consider...

Definitely something you should consider. A few months ago I wanted to upgrade my source and tried several options, including a McCormack UDP-1. It's a very nice piece, but I ultimately went with an external DAC for two reasons: First, it gave me better redbook playback; second, I didn't find the SACD playback of the McCormack to be much, if any, of an improvement over my Denon 2900. YMMV.

Wow great suggestion . . . I keep forgetting about buying a good DAC.
