Ok guys, a question that has come up before but I would love some suggestions please. I am looking to buy a used CD player (vintage ok) to replace a vintage Magnavox. My price I would like to stay under is $200.
Yes not much, but that is what I got. I have been looking at older
Marantz (63,67 MkII), Denon, NAD, and Rotel. What are your opinions and or suggestions? Analog input is what I plan on using at this time. May try Digital with a DAC later. Thanks!

on the used market.. $200 buys alot of player... I am only familiar with NAD, so I would of course recommend a NAD player in that price range.. those Brits know how to build a nice sounding CD player IMHO

Consider buying a new DVD player instead of a used CD player for that price range. For $200, the newer technology, even in a DVD player, may sound better than an older model CD player.

i would caution against buying a vintage cd player. of all the equipment in your rig, your source (cd, dvd, or even turntable) has the most moving parts and therefore the most chance of failing. might be better to spend the extra cash to get something new that will last for that much longer. plus, like early said, the technology is much better now. amps and pre-amps of today are very similar to those of 30 years ago, but cd and dvd players are advancing all the time. but ymmv.

The only used cd palyers I would even think of buying used would be tube or SACD players. Other wise I would buy new.

You can always add a Dac to your Denon 2900, that is what I did and it worked for me.

I got a Sony SCD-2000ES off ebay in like new condition. Works great for both CD and SACD. Analog 2-channel, analog 5.1, and digital outs. You can find one for $150 - $200 if patient. Build quality is good, but if you can find a 222ES, 333ES, or 555ES on the cheap, they are even better in build quality and looks.

With the CD digital out running through my Theta DAC, the sound is great!

This unit is for the shop. BUT, what did the DAC do for your 2900? I always thought it was pretty good the way it was. Do I feel an upgrade in the works?:D
