I am looking for new units for the shop rig. Currently I need a CD player because the old will only send signal to the left channel.
My question is (and I want to keep this cheap) do I go with an older used model from a upper end mfg. like the adcom and rotel units I have found for arround $100 used, or has technology improved enough that I will get better sound from a new mass-market brand around the same price range?

I am going to keep the 12 year old Vr-30 boston towers but will replace the old receiver with a newer used unit or may go with 2-channel seperates.

Is it possible to run wires to the shop? I use the Zone 2 funtion on my main system, with a seperate amp (not really needed though), to power my garage speakers. Then just get a remote repeater to control the unit from the garage. No other new equipment needed.

It's not attached to the house. I don't feel like digging a trench to run wires.

    Hello,MSALLA
I would say NEW,cheap, unit like a Sony 5 disc DVD/CD($120) with MP3 file playback capability. Hey you could add an LCD display and use the DVD as well.
MP3 in a shop or garage is a blast. The remotes handy for cycling through CD-R's burned with MP3 files. You can easily put 10+ hours of good sounding music on one CD-R. And blank CD-R's are CHEAP! Disposable and easily replaced if thrashed. 5 discs = 50 hours of music at your fingertips.

If you have an XP equipped computer then you already have Windows Media 11 a very user friendly program for burning and storing or playback.

CD-R's burned @192kbps or more sound really fine. In my garage (wish I had a detached shop) an older Windows 98 machine with Windows Media Player 9 feeds an old Sansui G3500 reciever feeding A/B speakers inside and outside.
And it sounds great out there. Internet radio is nice too.
I use a MP3 Capable Discman when I don't want to boot up the Desktop.

I have about 200 hours of high bit rate (320kbps) MP3 via a 400disc Sony DVD megachanger which sounds shockingly good in the 2 channel room. If I filled that with 400 CD-R's of 192 kbps MP3...that's about 150 days of music.

I'm reluctant to take beloved music CD's on the road, but on a 25 cent CD-R
    and 5+ albums a disc it's fun.

I know you just asked about a cheap CD player. Since DVD players that will play MP3 are priced about the same as a CD player it opens up some wonderful options for a desktop equipped household.

My shop rig consists purely of gear that I got for free.

Pioneer SX-450 - rescued from trash
Marantz speakers - given by a friend
Teac CDP - rescued from trash, LCD backlight dead, but who needs an LCD in the shop?

I barely use the CDP, I mostly just listen to the local classic rock station

Shop rigs do not have to be audiophile quality.
    Ludicrous gibs!

    Would that be 102.9?

I spend ALOT of time in the shop when I'm not working so I want something that sounds good.I don't need new cutting edge, but something used and a solid mif-fi piece of equipment is what I'm looking for. I found some nice older CDP's but I'm not sure if it would pay to get something newer.
