Thanks

Not being flippant here, but this has been discussed many times recently and I was part of a thread where some of us local Polkies did a breif comparison, so do a search and you'll be amazed at the info out there concerning your question

You can find an Adcom GFA-555 for $300 if you take your time. IMHO the adcom is a better amp, but the Outlaw has a five year warranty.

$400 is still a pretty good deal. But remember condition is what makes the $400 a pretty good deal.

I find that the Adcom is more musical in general, while the Outlaws are more geared toward HT.

I have a GFA-555 and 2 m200 Outlaws. Both are really good but I like the Adcom more. It's warmer than the Outlaws.

Check out e-bay and audiogon. Both have alot of GFA 555's for way under $400.00 that look to be in good shape from the pictures and discriptions.

OK. I finally got it. GFA 555 MKll for 350.00 with a 30 day warranty from Audio repair shop. This amp looks almost new and it sounds great at his shop. I will hook this up to my Onkyo TX-SR804 and LSI 7 this weekend. Have one question, for RCA cable, what should I look for in a good quality cable.

    Thank you

I'm running 5 GFA-535's, have so for quite a long time. They all have run perfectly and sound fantastic. I've never owned or heard an Outlaw amp but do own their 950 which is also a great pre/pro. No matter which you go with I'm sure you'll be quite impressed.

I use Acoustic Research and Blue Jeans both. They both sound identical but the BJ's are built better. I avoid Monster only because of their price but they sound just as good as both the above.

Ok, got the GFA 555 hooked up and LSI 7s sound great, but I have one question. When I turn the amp on,I can hear a slight pop from the speakers. Is this normal and could I just leave the amp on all the time.

    Thanks

what sequence do you power up your components? Adcoms are notorius for the "pop", due to the large caps,,mine always "popped" when powering the amp down.IIRC the amp shouls be the last thing powered up,,I leave mine on,,too lazy to turn them off :)

As stated above this is normal. I have a GFA-585. You should hear the bump that 16 woofers put out at startup:eek: :D

Im not familiar with the amp, but does it not have a standy mode so that when its receiving a signal it automatically powers up therefore preventing the use of the power switch itself?

No, older series Adcoms do not have a 12v trigger or standby. They have no muting relay or current limiting circuit. No need for them. I understand the convenience of a 12v trigger and I believe the later Adcoms have it, but since it's not a concern for me I've never verified if they do.
