OK I got the GFA-555II on Ebay and hooked it up to the pre amp out on my Sony STR-DG600 and I got dead silence! Upon further checking I discovered that the pre outs on this model are for the surrounds! That sucks!! Now I have a 35 lb paper until I can get a preamp. I need some help from the group on what I can get used in the price range of 300.00 to 400.00. Also help on a DAC in that same price range would be great.

Thanks

Get an HK or Denon receiver with Pre outs. You can find them here.

    http://myworld.ebay.com/harmanaudio/

    Heres a link to specs

    http://www.harmankardon.com/product_support/interstitial.aspx?Language=ENG&Region=USA&Country=US&sJump=om

They both are very respectable units. I prefer the HK because thats what I have used.

    Good luck

Your going to be much better off with George's Parasound pre than the recievers for a two channel music system.

What are you using as a source? If you want a Dac there are several models different members use, the parasound models running from the 1600 to the 2000 are quite nice. The Benchmark is excellent, the Musical Fidelity, the PS Audio, these are just to name a few, but if you have a great source you may not need a DAC.

Another way to make a OK source sound great is with a tube buffer, I use the Musical Fidelity X-can, it is excellent.

Thanks for all the help. After talking to my wife, after the laughter subsided, I need to go in a little more cost effective direction. I am looking at a Denon DRA-297 because it has pre out and is XM ready. I believe I can hook up the GFA-555II to the pre out with nothing attach to the speaker out on the amp. If anyone has any experience with this type of setup please let me know.

What I'm partially confused about is the suggestion of using a receiver when you're setting this system up as a 2-channel. Why not just get a decent, inexpensive, preamp?

Get yourself a Parasound P/HP 850. Dirt cheap, usually around $100 - $140 on the used markets, sounds pretty good, and has a decent phono section as well. Mine worked well with the GFA-535 I was using prior to picking up my Rotel.
Lovin that music year after year.

    Main 2 Channel System

    Polk SDA-1B,
    Promitheus Audio TVC SE,
    Rotel RB-980BX,
    OPPO DV-970HD,
    Lite Audio DAC AH,
    IXOS XHA305 Interconnects

    Computer Rig

    Polk SDA CRS+,
    Creek Audio 5350 SE,
    Morrow Audio MA1 Interconnect,
    HRT Music Streamer II

    Jay,

Just for the record you are going in an effecient direction as measured in terms of money, much different that effective as measured in how well the sound quality is delivered. We pretty much discount thelittle lady, smile nicely at her though, our divorce/bust up rate ranks pretty high, but feel free to hang around with the rest of us.

We are there for you man.

The reason I was considering the XM ready receiver was I have an XM ready receiver now and I will have to get new XM receiver if I go to a straight pre amp.
    Thanks for the help.
