2 Channel, no sub, and a cold beer.
I like speakers that are bigger than a small refrigerator but smaller than a big refrigerator:D

2 channel, direct mode with sub adjust for music{turned down a little} (R50's need help with lower end) and a nice cool drink.

I love how music can brighten up a bad day.

I also have an HK AVR and liked the stereo mode with the DSP turned off, with a sub to help with the low end. I'm a bass fiend and can't live w/out a sub. I have it dialed in so that it is seamlessly integrated into the mix.

The HK hooked up analog into the 6/8 Direct inputs has a larger more detailed soundstage than the digital connection. Salt with sub to taste, but you'll need some sort of BM on your player.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

I go with Stereo, front speakers set to large AND sub on. Digital input is what I use to get bass management, I don't think many CD players offer much in the way of BM.

I, like Ern, like a little bass in my music. If I want the best possible sound, I go to my 2-channel setup. If I want to bump, I got to the HT and make it loud.
Stereo Rig: Hales Revelation 3, Musical Fidelity CD-Pre 24, Forte Model 3 amp, Lexicon RT-10 SACD, MMF-5 w/speedbox, Forte Model 2 Phono Pre, Cardas Crosslink, APC H15, URC MX-950, Lovan Stand
Bedroom: Samsung HPR-4252, Toshiba HD-A2, HK 3480, Signal Cable, AQ speaker cable, Totem Dreamcatchers, SVS PB10-NSD, URC MX-850

My setup is slightly different now...but the way I used to have mine set up is as follows...

My CDP has two digital outputs, optical and coax. I used the optical output for the DVD input in the HK and the coax for the CD input. The DVD input was always set to Dolby digital surround for movies and the CD input was always set to 2-channel stereo.

The problem with the H/K receiver is you can't change crossover settings between the different inputs. so I optimized the sub for my HT tastes and just put up with it in 2-channel. Now I have an Entech Numbercruncher DAC that I feed into the L and R channels in the 6-channel direct mode so that I can play pure 2-channel with no sub. You can do the same if you have a decent DAC in your CDP as well.

I go through the settings on my Sunfire and see which one I think sounds the best.
Then I turn it up and walk away to do something productive.
