SVS 25-31cs+ Upgrade.

I currently have an SVS 25-31cs+ subwoofer with the 12.1 woofer in it. A 12.3 woofer from SVS would cost me about $170 to upgrade. I was wondering if another woofer would work in its place?

I.E. I run the SVS in a 20hz mode so I have an 16" by 29" sonotube with 2 20.5"x3" ports in it.

My question is, should I just get the 12.3 woofer to upgrade it or would something along the lines of a TC-2000 be a better upgrade? It would not cost that much more (currently on sale for $250) and is supposedly pretty close to the SVS ultra woofer in performance. (hearsay - I don't really know)

Anyway - what would you do and if replace with a woofer different than comes in the SVS, what do you recommend?

I know I could just sell the SVS and get/build something else, but the WAF is already paid for the SVS so if I could use at least the existing SVS shell, I should....

    Michael-

I've read somewhere before that you would not want to use another brand subwoofer in their enclosure. Somewhere along the lines of size of amp/enclosure for the specifications of the driver.

I'd email SVS to make sure, but I think your best bet is to just upgrade to the 12.3. That way you know everything was made to work together, plus you get warranty.

BTW, I might have my PCU's up for sale soon. Remember, you have first dibs.;)

After you sell your 12.1, you are into it for about 100. That ain't bad. I think TC originally manufactured the SVS woofers, but I might be wrong. That doesn't mean they are a drop in replacement though. Get the 12.3 - I don't think there is an unhappy upgrader out there.

The older SVS woofers are TC Sound woofs - but SVS heavily modifies them apparently...

The newer ones are SVS brewed... and the new + driver is equivelant to the old Ultra.

    Rock out my friend.

Don't hesitate changing woofers to a non-SVS brand. I did that once with an SVS sub and an Ascendant Audio woofer with very good results.

the new + driver is equivelant to the old Ultra.

    Equivelant? No.

The new 12.3 driver was suppose to come close in some areas, but no means equivelant.

    Michael,

I keep forgetting you have the CS model(non-amplified). From the looks of the enclosure specs on the TC driver it should work quit well in your cylinder. Seems to be a universal driver to work in wide array of enclosures.

That is one wicked looking driver from TC sounds, curious if anyone else tried it?

Have you tried checking the DIY forum over at AVS??

    Michael-

What's the news?? TC-2000 or 12.3, I'm quit anxious to hear the conclusion.

I have to remove the woofer in my 25-31 and see if the TC-2000 will fit in it. If it will, I think that is the woofer of choice... After that it will make a great driver for a diy sub. (and I can put the original woofer back into the 25-31 when I decide to sell it.)
