Velodyne VX-10 Subs with Polk R50 fronts

I had just set up my sub with my R50s fronts and Onkyo TX-SR504 and I have many questions. Please bear this email since this is my first setup and help with what you can. I have no surrounds/center yet. Just R50s and Sub.
1. Why does selecting "direct" on the Onkyo not send LFE to sub? Only selecting the "stereo" will send the LFE to sub while playing Music CD/Movies through DVD Player
2. What defines a "good" sub? I turned the volume knob on the velodyne to 50% volume and I don't get that shake. The room is a 13x30x9 with sub in the right corner and my sitting position at the 13x13x9 location. Windows are on the left wall, on the right wall, there is a big hole from midheight to to ceiling (for decoration) that leads to family room, which is another 13 wide. On the back of my sitting position is a wide open dining room and that extends into a wide open kitchen. What is a good volume usually to "feel" the sub?
3. When I turned the crossover to 80Hz on the Onkyo, I can still hear the R50 putting out bass (AVIA test frequency sweep test). From where I am sitting, I can barely distinguish the sub at all at 50%master volume. If I really listen closely, I can hear the bass extension, but it doesn't have that thump impact, even playing some heavy bass music cds. Is the velodynes THAT weak or is it my positioning?
4. What is the usually positioning of a sub? How many inches should it be from the back and side corner walls? Should the sub face be toed in to face sitting position or just parallel to the walls? Can it be behind or in front of the front speakers?
5. Is there a break in period for subs? How to break it in?
Anyways, I just feel dissapointed with the Velodyne after so much research. The Polk R50, on the other hand, seems to have great clear lows, almost seems like the R50s are OVERPOWERING the Velodyne. I checked the phase and phase button on the sub didn't seem to make much of a difference.
Just want to see if my experience is common for a low end sub paired with R50 fronts? Would anyone recommend some other <$200 subs that would really bring in the thump?
Thanks for reading.

We have a very similar setup, I have a Velodyne VX-10 and R50 fronts, with an Onkyo TX-SR304 receiver. See my post here about what might be happening http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66557
First try a Y-Splitter on your LFE output on your subwoofer cable and connect both ends into the L and R inputs on the back of the sub like pictured#1 below. See if that works. If not you'll have to run speaker-level input setup in picture #2 below.
