I'm now ready to add my second sub, I was going to go with another PB12 Plus 2, however I have been reading awesome reviews on the JL Audio Fathom 113. Has anyone heard or demoed this sub? Any suggestions, recommendations would help.

I'd personally wait until the new Ultra starts shipping in July, and the reviews start comming.

The word on the street is that the new ultra will have a lot more output from 20hz and under, and about the same in the higher octaves. All for about half the price.

I would not buy a 2nd sub that does not match exactly the frequency response and output of the first sub. When you get into EQ'ing dual subs, it is nearly an impossible job with duals. The BFD does have 2 EQ engines, but REW has no facility to eq dual subs and anything you do to one sub will affect the room performance, **** up the other one's curve. It is a tough job to say the least. With two identical subs you can apply a single curve.

I've heard people say you can smooth out frequency response with a 2nd sub of a different make/model, but it is definitely a harder job.

With a SPL meter and the right software, it's not difficult to tune in two different subs. It's just time consuming and can be back breaking moving them around. :D

2 different types of subs can be done, but face is dead on when he says its time consuming to get them to do what you need in harmony in a room.

some will say stack, but it didnt work out too well for me, so I had them in 2 different parts of the room, made balancing it out easier.

once I changed my sub driver in my diy box to a SVS plus, no 2nd sub was needed.

of course, I gotta ask how the hell a pb plus 12 isnt getting the job done, are you trying to pressurize a cave or something :D

Ask Ed Mullen...he recomended adding a Plus to a Plus/2 for a guy on AVS that had great results...I believe he's running them in the same tune (20hz), but differing gain. Got a very flat response utilizing a SMS. I'm running the 20-39+ and DIY+ and got a much flatter response with some pretty astounding bass levels when it's called for. I imagine a new Ultra with the Plus/2 will work with a bit of tweaking.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

Why not 16 subs! Hell yes if the EMPIRE in Leicester square is using 16 JBL 4645C for as part of there THX sound system with 20KW in the sub bass department not to mention the whole system is a powerful 56KW:eek: :D .

So the more subs and the more attention to tuning I’d say you’ll collapse the foundations of your home around ears.:D

The more you add the lower it will go as well as playing very loud, but it’s the depth you want that is what you’re aiming for. But please remember not to let the sub bass overwhelm the rest of the sound system it should merely accompany it not smear it without colorization of the sound.

Hey Shep, why not just order another PB12-Plus/2? After adding my second, I'll never look back. In my room, which is 14' wide, 24' deep w/ 8' ceilings I've actually had my teeth rattle together while watching the glass tap scene in Finding Nemo.

To add to what Ron said, one of the best investments I've every made was adding a SMS-1 for the dual subs. Just being able to have total control over just the SUBS on the fly I think is a real benefit. If you have any questions about the SMS-1, you know how to contact me. Later Bro.
