Rear fill mumbo jumbo...

From day one in car audio I've heard a lot of really good setups and they have all had rear fill. Due to some maniac ramblings I've read on this site my current project has started purposely using front component speakers only. Its a whole change in mental attitude.
So far I am much more impressed with doing it this way than I thought I would be. I am getting a good full bodied sound and am thinking more and more this may be the way to go. Keep in mind I only installed some door speakers quickly and played with positioning of the tweeter. (this is no killer system by any means).
Still lots to do later but I had to get some sound going for now.

Glad you've come on to our side
Just like in home audio, you have your 2-channel set up, same with a car if youre going for sound quality. I'm just hoping mine will finally be done by the end of the summer.

Exactly! Being a home audio freak, youre no stranger to great SQ and I notice that in your sig full of top notch reference gear, you dont have rear speakers.
As Steve so eloquenlty put it, "Ill go multi-channel as soon as I grow 3 more ears!"

... 2 channel (just fronts) won't be as loud though unless you have some powerful speakers. I enjoy having just a set of components and no rear-fill, but I also run 200 something watts to each front speaker. The Artist formerly known as PoweredByDodge

True. It wont be as loud. The low frequencies wont be as canceled out, the detail wont be as smeared, the soundstage wont be pulled to the back as much, the imaging wont be as hazy but more focused.....polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

Only damn car I have where rear fill is useful is the caddy -- 3.5's dash units up front and 6x9's in back... unless i cut the car up to fit at least 5.25 comps, then we aint-z gettin rid-z of the rear fill-z.The Artist formerly known as PoweredByDodge

Although I'm a newbie car stereo guy, I have made a career out sound and music.
LEARNING TO HEAR:
I wonder how many people realize that listening, really listening, is a learned skill. It can be taught and improved upon. Nobody "gets" what "imaging" is by default. Resonant frequency? Friends of mine never noticed this in their systems until I taught them how to listen for it. NOW it bothers them, whereas they previously never noticed it, because they can finally hear it, lol.
Once one learns to discriminate the subtle nuances of sound, two things happen:
1. Your life vastly improves.:p
2. You forget about rear speakers. They mess up the imaging, and the stage, and put you in a swirling tank of "woah, cooool, the sounds are coming from everywhere, yuk yuk!" newbie naivety. -
I definitely agree!
Now that Ive been competing for a year and a half, Im hearing things in my music now that I never heard before. I can pick up on imaging cues much easier now, but I can put it in front of a judge and he can pick out all kinds of things wrong with it that I never heard before but now that theyre pointed out, they seem obvious!
Its definitely a learned skill or God given talent.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005
