I don't believe sanding the end caps is recommended. F1 would be able to give you direction on this, so wait for him to respond.

Yeah, I would imagine the veneer is rather thin on top of that particle board. Short of redoing them completely like someone else's posts I've been reading, I'm good to go with what's recommended as mine are in perfect shape as far as the wood goes. They just need a little TLC. Thanks H9!

Actually, the veneer Polk used is rather thick by todays standards. I still wouldn't sand them and IMO, sanding is generally a waste of time and money. You'd be surprised how little sanding I do in the shop.

Anyway, if they need refinishing, stripping is the only way to go.

It's a wonder thing, isn't it!! Just think they will only get better. RD0's are definetly your next step as that will take them up another notch

agreed.... the RD0's will take them even further in the right direction... treat yourself and order them.. you'll be glad you did. ;)

    Nice work on the crossovers.

I think I'll give these about a month and then order the tweeters. That will give me time to go thru some various music, get the crossovers broken, and make some notes to "self" about what changed thus far. But I am anxious to get the RD0's and see the difference. All in due time!

To my ears, I'm still amazed that Allison Krauss' voice isn't ripping me a new one about now but they just sound better and better. God I love 2-channel.

F1...what do you recommend stripping them with for the best results? Are you recommending to re-stain them? Thanks for your input....

I prefer the original semi-paste Strypeeze, follow the directions. Yes, a little color usually brings out the best in a piece of wood.

    Hi F1,

Are all of the 1C's laquered? Mine (1989) in natural oak, don't appear to have anything but a light stain or oil. No shine at all, never did.

I enquired at Polk some years ago about what finish they used on the SDA's and was told satin lacquer. However, I have seen some that have a rather dull, lifeless look to them, like there wasn't a clear coat finish on them. In fact, I have a pair of walnut 1C's in the shop right now that look very dull, but the speakers are in rather poor condition overall. The last pair of mint 1C's (natural oak) I saw were at Doro's and they definitely had a satin lacquer finish on them as do my medium oak 2.3TL's.

Interesting. Mine definetley have no clear coat. I like the way they look though. The SDA-CRS+ that a freind owns, have the same finish as mine too. We did buy them about the same time.

I think that about describes mine, too. No real "luster" to them. Not awful, mind you, but no sheen.

I note this thread has evolved from crossover mods to cabinet maintenance (I note I'm still waiting for a DIY friend to mod my 1-C crossovers, so that part of the thread is interesting as well.) Anyway, I have the studio version of the SDA 1-Cs and am wondering what others do to maintain the exterior of the studio version? I feel that mine are in excellent condition (see pic here); however, it won't hurt my feelings to run across an idea that will help maintain my speakers' minty look. In advance, thanks for any and all suggestions.

The studio versions have a vinyl laminate covering, dust with damp cloth and enjoy the music.
