A Manley Thing

I had the pleasure of playing with my new toy over the weekend.

Here are a few shots of her playing with the boys, using the Opera Consonance as source, stayed strictly Redbook this Weekend.

In Rotation:

LSI 7's
Monitor 10's
Carver Amazings

with

Eagles
Desperado
Zepplin
How the West was Won
Little Feet---Waiting for Columbus
Pet Sounds--Beach Boys
Alison Krause-Live at Union Station
Heart
Alive in Seattle
Janos Starker-Schuman/St. Sains Cello

This one is a keeper, running in either Triode or Ultra-Linear she was smooth throughout the mids and upper's with solid bass, the Stingray could drive the Amazings (Platinum's) to a 90 db SPL in Ultra-Linear and it did sound good but she gave up some of the bass and holographic image I heard with LSI-7 and especially the Monitor 10's. It had been a while since I had listened to 10's and was quickly reminded of what a terriffic rock speaker they really are.

Very pleasing to look at, with a high WAF, I am running two quads of EI-Elite's EL84's, as output tubes and they are all that and a box of chocalate cherries as far as this amp. The tube complement fills out with with two 6414 phase splitters and two 12AT7's as the input tubes. The Opera is a nice match sonically with the Stingray. Four inputs which are nicely marked as the right and left inputs are located on their respecitve sides to keep the signal paths short and isolated.

Hear it soon at a Polkfest near you........................

A nice amplifier, and not even outrageously expensive. I do wonder why EveAnna doesn't make a lower-powered, PP EL84 version... I have to think it'd sound better than a PPP EL84 amp, all things being equal (note that this opinion is neither scientific nor rational!).

I'm surprised that thing powers the Carver amazings at all. The Monitor 10's sound like a reasonable match but you could use something much more efficient as far as speakers go. How much power is the amp?

    Thanks guys for the comments.

Well I just had to try MM, you know me. I was not expecting much, but remember I am running the Platinum's which are much more effecient that the Originals. That said, I much prefer the BAT gear with the Carver's. The 10's sound excellent as do the LSI7's with the Stingray, of course I have no musical subs, so the 7's will not dig near as deep as the 10's. I might even pick up a sub but have to think about that one, but even old guys can try a new trick now and then.

Conservative rating is 20w in Tetrode and 40w in Ultra Linear, You see ratings of 25-50 on the site, anyway, I put an SPL on the 10's and I was pushing 96db from 9ft away, I was rocking away, no distortion, about 10:00 on the dial. I do not hear a great difference in the two output modes each are very nice.

I would say this integrated offers an excellent dollar value.

I might try some highly efficient speaks, maybe some horns as I do not have any, it would give me something else to spend dough on.

Everyone should have a good EL84 amp.

Have you tried triode vs normal mode yet? I've had two different manleys which were switchable and always migrated towards leaving them set for triode. To tell you the truth I've been very suprised at how little you loose going to half the power. Hardly seems noticeable.

Yes, I found the same thing, I did however need to flip it to Ultra Linear which is full power to drive the Amazings as they just required to much power for the tetrode mode, even then they lost that special little magic you get in the last 5% or so. The amp is designed to run speakers at least 90 db sensitivity.

    Is it Common Ground?

Sorry there Miller missed your question. Yes it is a "common ground" at least EveAnna at Manley says you can use it to play SDA with the regular interconnect.
