Are tiptoes overrated?

I have a next door neighbor who is crazy about tiptoes... i mean crazy. He puts them under every piece of equipment he owns, and claims that is the reason his system sounds so great.

Do these little 14 dollar objects really make or break a theater? is it worth my time investing in these?

The main pieces of equipment he says they help are Subwoofers and speakers... everywhere I look people use them for amps/preamps/receivers...

    If he has so many just ask if you can borrow some for the electronics. Give it a shot and let him know what kind of differences they made. This way you can test out something new that might make a huge difference for you without the risk of buying snake oil.

    I've found that isolation feet; be they cones, vibrapods, whatever; have the most effect with CD player/transports.

    I never noticed a difference either way on any component. I use various kinds of isolation feet mainly for aesthetic purposes.

    hes so crazy about them, he would never let me borrow them. He told me where to buy some, but I'm not spending $14 a piece on something like that without knowing if it makes a difference

    Go over to his place, ask if you can blind test the difference with them and without them on some of his equipment. If he really loves them, he'll be eager to show you the difference.

    If you can notice the difference, that is.

    I have to put all my money in the right places to get this system up and running. I still havent told everyone that I am finishing my basement in order to make this theater room... at this point I am trying to cut cost everywhere... since the audio equipment keeps rising in price. \

    I still need amp, receiver, subwoofer, 1 pair LSiFX, power protection, remote... yeah, I have some priorities.

    I didn't realize you were at that point. No point in dropping money on tweaks for gear you don't have yet. Harass him about an in home demo at his house and go from there ;)
