Universal Remotes

Anybody have any recomendations for a good universal RF capable remote (components are in a closet behind the plasma).

Right now I'm leaning towards the Logitech Harmony 890 and at $220 seems like a good deal. For now main operations are the yamaha reciever which also has a ipod connected to it, panasonic dvd player, panasonic tv, and the Comcast DVR Box.

Also I'd like to be able to hook up the remote to the light dimmer and the security system although I'm not quite sure how it would do for the security system but I think it would be a nice feature for the gf when I'm not there.

Anyway suggestions from people who own some would be great.

Are the components in the closet RF capable? Most aren't, so I don't see how an RF remote will help you get through the door.

I have several speakers throughout the house and garage, and I control the components with one of these:

You can get extra transmitters seperatly for any other rooms if needed, and just set the reciever in the closet next to the equipment. Works with all your current IR remotes.

Many universal remotes transmit to a receiver via RF and the receiver converts them to IR.

Are the recievers included with the Harmony remotes? I have never seen one, but if so, looks like another good option.

Yep what he said. I don't know of any RF remotes that don't come with converters for IR. Thats kind of why the RF remote was developed.

What I'm wondering is how does the remote hook up to the light dimmers? Also I read that it can control security systems that sounds interesting also.

I have the base RF/IR module placed high up so the IR goes across the room to activate my remote dimmer. You may have to get creative.
