New Speaker stands

I just received my Plateau ST-30 speaker stands, got the cherry base and the black pillar and top. It's almost like these things were built to match the cherry LSi speakers, very nice match.
Anyway, they can be filled with something, and I'm thinking sand or lead shot as I've seen both mentioned here. Does it matter which one I go with, any advantage to eitehr one?
Should I fill the pillar all the way to the top, or just half way?
I kinda like the idea of shot instead of sand as it may be cleaner to work with, but I'll be damned if I can find anywhere in Dallas where I can buy it, have tried several gun shops and sporting goods stores that sell hunting stuff, may try a gun range...
Any advice on which to use and how much? Should I expect any audible difference by filling the stands, or just a more stable stand?

Sand and lead is best. Lead weighs more, but sand gets in between all the shot. Do both.
