PS505 hookup

OK, being the extreme "novice" I am, I'm looking for a little help here. I recently unhooked my sub, because I am painting my basement, and I don't remember how I hooked it up before. I'm sure I got advice from you guys the last time. Anyway, I have a sub cable hooked up to the receiver, but I don't remember how it was hooked up to the sub????

Please, any help is appreciated.

There should be a subwoofer connection spot on your receiver. Just plug in the subwoofer to that and turn it on. :)

Husker, since you're apparently using your receiver to handle the crossover duties, the connecting cable should be plugged into the LFE input on the 505. This bypasses the internal filter in the 505 and lets the receiver handle the crossover without interference from the sub circuitry.

Thanks John. Is this the "perferred" method of hooking the sub up?

few options are available. I assume you have an AVE and a 5 channel rig.

    1) Setup all your speakers in the AVR as SMALL, and connect your sub via the LFE (the way you do now). that way the sub handles all the bass in your system.
1.1) If your AVR supports it, you can tweak the cross over of the speakers.
80 HZ is a popular choice, but it an individual thing, so experiment away.
if not then its fine, your AVR has a fixed Xover setup.

    2) Setup your front speakers on the AVR as LARGE (full range) , and connect your sub via the LFE, now you can setup the AVR to send the bass for both the sub and the fronts.

If your AVR has preout jacks for all the sound channels there is a 3rd option
    3) Setup the AVR so there is NO sub, then you setup the Fronts as LARGE, and connect the sub via the Left and Right preouts. on the subs end, you do not use the unfilttered LFE in, rather you use the line level L & R.
3.1) in this configuration you should set the sub's low pass filter to wharever sounds bes to you. (This is the preferred method acording to polk audio educational, in this site)

If none of this makes sense to you, and you like the way your system performs, just kick back, play movie and enjoy your new paint job (If the paint is fresh enough, there might be a small high waiting for you in your walls).

another thing you can do, is use the search option in the forum. this issue has been debated countless times, and you can probably dig up some threads surrounding is topic.

Thank you very much for the detailed response Liordra. I do have an HK635, and am using RTI 12's and CSI5 as center, and have Fxi5's for the surrounds (2 pair). I do remember now messing with the fronts as small & large, and preferred the sound as large, so I will use the LFE to connect my sub, and maybe look at how my crossover is set on the on-screen setup. Thanks again! It is nice to have knowledgeable people on this forum, and I know I can get help when it is needed.
