Name one or two of the best free or low cost tweaks you ever made...
What made that particular tweak so good?

Although not low cost................getting rid of the wifey! :D . Probably adding spikes to my stands. Seems like a boring tweak but it certainly sharpened up the bass.

Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. A nice heavy piece of MDF under my turntable took it from being a midbass thumper to a full range instrument of the Gods. Got the piece out of the dumpster so it was free.

    - placing my speakers on clay tiles (carpeted floor): Tightens bass; improved midrange
    - cable management; seperating all ac/speaker/ic's/digital (bag of ty-wraps): eliminates noise

screw with the EQ in your system. a lot of systems run really bright in the first place. ALSO, if your system has auto EQ type of function, run that without the grilles on your speakers. after that's done, cut out some thin carpet (exactly like the stuff that's in your car's trunk) and stick it in the area inside the grille where your tweeters are located. makes a WORLD of difference if your system is exessively bright.
