My system has been hooked up for a while now, but it just doesn't seem to give me that heart pounding mind blowing sound everyone says it should. I have it hooke up using sufficient wire (Monster Cable 12ga.), and the runs to the 70's and center speaker are not very far (less than 6ft.) the rears are further (about 20ft.). The settings on my AVR are 80 mhz on all speakers, the fronts are set at 4db, the center is 3db and the rear is 3db with the sub @ 5db. With a fairly high volume setting it just doesn't seem to produce the soud so many people describe. Am i doing something wrong? or is it that my ears are more than likely playing tricks on me? Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks for the help..................

For some reason I could not get the ump I wanted from Onkyo either and neither could my friend that had the 804 so he went with the Denon 5803 and notice a hugh difference in sound.

I dont know whats the problem besides that. I have found Onkyo to never lack "umphh". Every Onkyo AVR I have owned and listend to (502, 704 and my dad's 604) has never dissapointed me in terms of power.

I tend to stay away from the DSP (hall, cinema, etc) and stick with PLII or Neo6

I'm not taking up for Onkyo, but they are one of the few manufactures that give pretty "true" specifications.

Another option to think about. . .

Maybe go with a cheap pre/pro or AVR with Pre-outs and a nice multi-channel amp. Separate amps definitely give good oomph, and you can find a decent AVR / Multichannel amp combo for around $1K, maybe less if prudent in your shopping.

Is there a "night mode" that might be enabled. Have you checked the dB level with a meter to see what the volume level really is? If not it couldn't hurt to set the channel levels as well.
