Although I do not believe in absolutes...
...Does Sony set the standard for VIDEO?
Now, I am only talking about XBR & ES lines here but it seems to me that (in general) if you are in the market for a quality TV or DVD player, Sony is on top of the list?
Thoughts?
Caveat: I am not endorsing SONY...just stating what appears to be the obvious.

p.s. Just chillin' here on a Friday night enjoying a few Sierra Nevadas!!!

Around Sony is "ok". I myself was in love with the ES lineup and still use a 7100 ES as a pre/pro. As for video the XBR lineup is considered very nice, however theres more out there. Mitsubishi and Samsung are right up there with Sony if you ask me and there are others also. I just completely crossed the road and went front PJ so Im onto something else. But Sony does make a clean display, depending on model of course. Welcome to the club, what does your system consist of?Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I think back in the day Sony was the **** but not anymore. My Mitsubishi DLP has one of the best pictures i've seen. And i did alot of comparason shopping before i bought it. Oh and welcome to the club.

Like audio, I think video is subjective. I shopped around, compared, contrasted, ate in front of, etc. several different makes and technologies when I chose my tv a few months ago. I ended up with a Sony LCD RP. I saw things with other formats that I don't see on the Sony but YMMV. One of the best things about a Sony, Sammy, or Mits is that they're everywhere. It's very easy to compare them with identical sources and find the one that fits your bill.

Sony? Seriously? They make some decent TVs, that's about it.If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Maybe that was the case 15 years ago, but not today.
Other brands have taken a significant portion of Sony's market share, and some of these brand's equipment is equal or better than Sony. Most of this equipment is shared across brands as it is largely manufactured in the same factories. Usually the only things that might differ among two like TVs (e.g. Sony vs. Sharp) are "proprietary technology" (in my opinion this is just hype), the asthetics, and the brand logo.
That said, many people live and die by brand names. The Sony TV will look nice next to your Bose Accoustimass system.Do you hear that buzzing noise?
