... on Audiogon that some guy had converted an old barn or out building into a dedicated audio room. He had a single chair in the sweet spot, high end equipment, dedicated electrical circuits, a step by step description of his construction, etc.
I thought it was in 2 channel audio, but could have been the clubhouse. If you remember the thread, please hook me up. I was telling a friend about it then found out I deleted the link in my favorites. It's fun to see an investment in audio that outweighs my entire net worth. Thanks.

It was an old barn which was converted into an audio room. The system is in the 'All out Assult' and belongs to Mike Lavigne. You can find it here. All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third, it is accepted as self evident.

That guy has a different pair of speakers everytime I see the rig....
Must be nice. Haha- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Did you ever think he may be successful in his choosen profession and enjoys audio?
Read some of the many posts on his system page to better understand who he is. He also has two articles; one on the construction of the room (at the bottom of the system description) and another on the VSA VR-9 SE speakers he once had.All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed, second it is violently opposed and third, it is accepted as self evident. -

It is kindof depressing to think about how long I have to work to earn enough to buy one set of this speaker cables.
I love that this guy is living his dream, however it seems like the money could have been put towards studio type construction and studio grade hardware to get to his goal, transparency and resolution, rather than buying all "audiophile" stuff, that is, if the goal he states was truly his mission in the first place.
Studio equipment is going to be naturally the least "colored" compared to even the most expensive audiophile stuff. It looks to me like his goal of having the most "invisible" equipment and cabling took a back seat to trying to be a pimped out audiophile.
I am not knocking it though, but if resolution and transparency are what you are truly after it would make sense to use the best of what actual studios use to record everything in the first place, but it wouldn't look as cool and expensive. Even the most expensive Genelecs look down right conservative compared to the various speakers I see in those pics, but would have superior resolution and transparency when installed properly (that is their main purpose, afterall).
Many many audiophiles secretly enjoy the slight "flavors" of their equipment (and swapping stuff to taste) and would get bored very easily of studio equipment that, by design, isn't supposed to have "personality".
I like his TT though, vinyl is an area where it really does take cash money to extract the most pure signal. -
This gentleman is a supporter of Home Audio and its survival.
Keep this in mind, he will buy the latest and greatest with new technology to help push the envelope and for people like us to get the new stuff.
Hes one of those "first in line" guys that lets the guy that waits 6 later get the good prices.
And while studio speakers sound very good. They lack the "soul" of a loudspeaker that makes it enjoyable to listen to.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
hey lack the "soul" of a loudspeaker that makes it enjoyable to listen to.
Yes, but I am going to quote his goal from the photo page:i have choosen my cables, sources, amps, speakers to have as little of their own sound as possible.
I think that this is not being honest with himself. If that was truly his goal, then speaker "soul" would be exactly what he would be trying to avoid, and yes, his place would not look like audiophile pimp headquarters, but more like a studio. There is nothing wrong with building your system to personal taste, but I don't know why so many audiophiles hate to admit that is what they are REALLY doing.
Ain't nothin' wrong with a little soul. -
Unless anybody here has been to Mike's house and listened to his system can they fairly comment? Perhaps his system is musical truth. In regards to the cables he uses. When a person has invested several thousands on gear (with seemingly no limit) do you really think he was 'dumb' enough to buy into hype? At that level I think the dollar amounts are really a side issue, the issue for him is getting his system to sound right.

Yes I do. Dollars spent has nothing to do with common sense. From what I have seen, the more someone spends, the more likely they are to buy into various snake oils. -
Yeah but it isn't about being dumb, it is about making absolutely sure. I mean... when money is no object, what is to stop you from making sure you are not taking any chances at not reaching the sound you want?
I know how my mind works, and it would eat away at me knowing there are tweaks out there that may or may not work, but that they are out there and I haven't tried them (that is, if I could afford all of them). -
there is an old saying,, until you hear something better, your system sounds great. i know someone who went out a spent $300 for speakers cables and said he liked the $1 a foot old monster cable better!!. go figure
