11T problem

Here's the symptoms. When I play the speakers a "little" loud driven by an NAD 2200 (or anything I've used for that matter) one of the speakers drops out on the high end. Not totally, but things like the real high cymbals almost dissapear on one speaker. The tweeter still is producing, though. Just not as much as it should. I turn the volume down almost all the way for a few seconds then turn it back up again and it lasts 5-10 seconds and drops out the highs again.

I swapped the L & R speaker and the problem followed the speaker.

The weird thing is the tweeter is still working, just seems to be getting choked off.

Does this sound like a bad thermal switch? If so, can I take it out and just wire in a fuse block and use a 1 amp fuse like the old days. I don't trust the thermal switches, especially if that turns out to be the problem.

It sounds like the tweeter protection poly switch. I am not an expert on replacing them, but Ken at Polk customer service should be able to send you new ones. There are many people on the forum that can guide you throug replacement.

; yep, I do believe it's the polyswitch, just replaced em' on my 11t project,,be careful when you unscrew the crossover from the cup as the wires do not give you alot of open range, so to speak.;)
JC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Agreed, polyswitch going south. I would not recommend replacing them with fuses.

+1. This is very common with older Polks. The Poly switch just starts to trip earlier and earlier. They are easy to replace if you are even only a novice with a soldering iron. I would also not recommend replacing them with fuses. It's a bit more work and you'll gain nothing as once the Poly switches are replaced they will give you years of service unless they are really abused. Ken sent myself and others replacements for no charge, I'd assume he'd do the same for any CP member.

What is simple about replacing poly switches with fuses? What benefit? It's certainly not brain surgery to wire fuses up instead, but why not just replace the poly switches?

I've PM'd Ken about the switches and asked his opinion on fuses.

The only reason I would put in a fuse instead of a polyswitch is because it is a "clean" path and you always know it works 100% or not at all. I've had my suspicions about this 11T for a while and it just got worse. Now I'm wondering about my 2.3TL. I could have one tweeter doing the same thing and I'd have a hard time telling with 3 tweeters (I assume it has 3 polyswitch in each).

If you are sensible with the volume control you could bypass the polyswitch with a jumper and just be done with it. They don't block DC so the only thing they protect is the tweet being overdriven. If you don't like the poly that's what I would do.

I see the point of a fuse either being 100% or not. When I had Polks with poly's I never had any issues.

They don't block DC??? You sure? That would surprise me, but I know nothing about them.
