It's a true HD DVD player. That is the model Toshiba came out with to sell at Wal-Mart, it's identical to the A1 besides the all black facia.

so it's basically a lower quality if it was made for wal-mart?T.V.- Sony KDL50W800B

No. Like I said, it's IDENTICAL to the A1, besides the all black facia. They slapped a different model number on it, that's all. -
why do u think it is so much cheaper then other hd-dvd players?T.V.- Sony KDL50W800B

It's the first gen player, probably just trying to get rid of it?

The D1 is a good player, just really slow to boot.
The second generation A2 is more user friendly, but not as good of a build quality. If you want better functionality I'd say go for the A2, If you want the best of both worlds and have the cash, get the XA2. -
is hd-dvd the way to go, or is blue ray better u think, also what is best way to hook up for sound quality?T.V.- Sony KDL50W800B

What is your opinion of the XA1?Michael

Both is best!:)
Check out the titles on each of them and decide which you like best. For sound quality, HDMI or analog outs will be the best. -

I love it!:)
Pros: Wonderful upconverter, HD DVD, CD player, build quality. Great universal player!
Cons: Slow boot and load times. -
how would I get dolby truehd, or is that something my avr has to have?T.V.- Sony KDL50W800B

Is there much of a difference between the two other than the latest model. Does the XA2 boot and load faster?
Sound Quality - Better than my Proceed AVP doing the conversion? I wonder.Michael

The player does all the decoding. You will get TrueHD via LPCM through HDMI or 5.1 analog outs. -

The XA2 loads worlds faster, and is a slightly better upcoverter thanks to the HQV REON chip on the XA2, the XA2 also supports HDMI 1.3 and does 1080p.
Also, the XA2 is about half the size of the XA1 if that's a concern?
Can't comment on the Proceed AVP, but you'll not be disappointed with the Toshiba.

I personally think its way too soon to buy any of the HD-DVD or BluRay players. Give them another year or two and they will be vastly improved. Boot up times will diminish, navigation speed will improve, additional features will be added, and hopefully, a true universal BluRay/HDDVD player will be on the market. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

If i get best sound the 5.1 analogs would that work for all movies hd or non hd? or would I still have to hook up my optical or just the analogs?T.V.- Sony KDL50W800B

You would just connect the analogs. -

I was talking more about the quality players that are bound to come out. Denon, Marantz, and Yamaha haven't even stepped into the ring yet. I can't wait to see what they put out. I think Pioneer Elite is about to come out with its 2nd gen BluRay, but not much on it yet.For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

They should be nice, just a nice price tag to follow... -

Well, the earliest (1st/2nd) generation of just about any electronic product is usually the most expensive. As time goes on, they can build on previous R/D, cut costs in non-essential areas, get lower prices on parts due to larger production, etc. I expect that by 4th/5th generation, you will be able to get a very good quality player with better features and performance for under $500.For rig details, see my profile.
