Today I just picked up the following HT setup:

RTI8 Front
FXI3 Rears
CSI3 Center
PSW10 - Not a hard hitter I know but it's a condo
Yamaha RX-V661 reciever

Anyway one ofthe thing impressed me was the surround sound audio cds. Now I'm planning on connecting a panasonic up-converting DVD player to the home theatre system to play DVD Music discs can I use this or basically what arep eople using these days to play cds? I have the ipod connected to the yamaha so I saw no reason to get a regular cd player. Anyway want to pick up a few of these dvds to show off the new system and because they sound spectacular.

    Welcome!

Lots of people use their dvd players to play their cd's So it will be fine.

And do be sure to get all the IC's you need to play DVD-A's & SACD's.

Here is a good option that won't cost you an are and a leg.

Analog over HDMI? Any reason why?

I imagine that like optical audio, HDMI is a digital signal which is not used for those formats. But someone will quickly correct me if I am wrong.

Ok, well maybe I am just old and feeble here folks, where does he get the DVD-A from, not a standard DVD player, you cannot get DVD-A over a digital line to a receiver. Well, you can use an I-link but that is it.

    Naeeldar,

Welcome to Club Polk, the DVD-Audio disc is a high-resolution disc that uses a form of pulse code modualtion, the best are the MLP process which was invented by Bob Thomas at the Meridan Audio Company--MLP=Meridian Lossless Process, Mr. Thomas' company makes several outstanding players for DVD-A that are also very pricey.

I would recommend a universal player for your needs, it will play either DVD-A or the other high rez disc called a SACD, these also play all the formats, so they are called universal players, there are many companies that make these, a couple of favorites used by members here are Denon and Pioneer.

I hope that helps. I definetely recommend you explore high resolution audio, its great. Get the best player you can, you will be glad in the end.

I believe he said he has a panasonic upconverting dvd player (with HDMI). I have two models of these with the S77 being the better. It at least plays DVD-Audio and HDCD. The only thing it does not play as I recall is SACD. The point I was making is that he cannot play DVD-Audio through the HDMI cable (at least that was my thinking). He needed analog cables to that. (ain't it great to have people talk about you like you're not even in the room?)

You can play DVD Audio via HDMI as long as you have a receiver that will pass the audio through HDMI.

I'm 99% sure he's talking about DVD video discs of music venues , not DVD-A. The DVD-V discs are not hi-rez, he's just woed by the surround sound feature, which for the most part sounds un-natural to the serious listener.

HDMI does not pass DVD-A, to the best of my knowledge, but will pass the audio from a DVD-V disc.
I have the ipod connected to the yamaha so I saw no reason to get a regular cd player.

You have much to learn, so stick around and we'll get you on the right path.

HDMI will pass DVD-A (version 1.1 or higher), but will not pass SACD unless the version is 1.2 or higher. The Marantz model mentioned above has HDMI 1.1 (as does the DV9600), whereas most AVRs are running at least 1.2a, if not 1.3 these days. Shame that the player specs aren't keeping up with the AVR specs!

I really doubt it and I am for sure not going to take some internet guy's advice.............................err....................I guess that would be me.......

Well, IF HDMI version whatever can pass DVD-A and IF HDMI version of another can pass SACD we are all just as screwed as when we started, I will just use analog connects which actually works until I feel like using some HDMI version xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx. However, I believe he was talking about DVD-V. Things do change and did. Somtimes HDMI can pass a high rez signal if the gear supports it, its not about versions per say but what manufacture's choose to have their components support, seems confusing, so just because one version xxxxx of HDMI can pass one signal it does not mean it actually will. Like I said, I will just use analog which actually works.

sorry cat, this HDMI stuff is for the younger ones, ole RT1 has a tough time with it, in the end it will probably be better, someone mentioned the manufacture's not being able to keep up and just picking certain "options" of HDMI to work on there machines.

Maybe one day it will get worked out but who knows.

You're not the only one having a hard time with it Ted! It's precisely the reason I have basically ignored all of it. Some people have obviously forgotten the old saying..."KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID!!!"

Just for the record guys, I too use analogue cables as IMO they still sound as good, if not better than HDMI.

I actually did a comparison yesterday watching a normal 5.1 DVD - flicking between inputs of "Multi Channel In" (MCI) (Tara Labs ICs) and "DVD" (HDMI) on the same player (Yammie DVD-S2500). To me, it sounded "richer" with a deeper bass via the MCI, which left HDMI to handle video only.

I think there is a misconception out there that because the DVD is in "Dolby Digital", it's delivery needs to be the same via optical, HDMI etc., whereas analogue MCI is delivering the same effects.

My AVR has HDMI version 1.2a and my DVD player has version 1.1. I too earlier on in the piece "believed" that HDMI / iLink was better, but saw the light when comparing Multi channel SACD (DSOTM). When it comes down to it, cfrizz has it right with the KISS principle.

    Ciao for now.
