Basic Budget System Speaker Upgrade R50 From R10

I have had my speakers for several years and considering a small upgrade. Single income family so the budget is next to nothing. Anyway This is what I have

Yamaha HTR-5460 (5x100) I think
Center CS175
Front and Rear are R10
Sub is PSW 350

Considering upgrading the front to the R50. They are about $180 for a pair. Would this make a noticeable difference? Also kinda off subject but I have everything I need to make my own speaker boxes. Having 2 sets of the r10's I could Make kinda of a LSiFX type speaker box using the R10 speakers. Does this sound stupid? Or add another speaker into the cs175 and then use the tweeters to make a FXi3 type of surround speaker. I have no clue on if I could use the current crossover in the speaker or what the Ohm rating would be so any help there would be helpfull or is it just stupid?

if i am not mistaken, the r10 is a bookshelf and the r50 was the biggest tower in the r line.

if thats the case, you should definitly notice an inprovement with the r50, and that seems to be a good price for them if they are still new. if they are used, then I think you can do better speaker wise.

if you put r50's as mains, I would try to wire the 2 r10's in a series off the center channel from your reciever. might give you a better front soundstage than just rolling with a cs175. if its better, you can sell the 175 later.

give it a try, experimentation is one of the fun things about this hobby

I have R 50's and they are good speakers. $180 for a pair is kinda High unless that includes delivery. I bought mine from Fry's, first set was 99 each,
second set was 69 each. Check at Fry's they have them on sale from time to time.

Its about $170 shipped for the r50's For anyone looking its cheaper to buy 1 twice than it is to buy 2 at the same time. Shipping for 2 is $40 while it is only $15 for one. Not exactly sure why that is.

odd, but if that includes shipping, it doesnt seem to be a bad deal at all.

I own both and I think you'll be happy with the upgrade. $170 shipped seems pretty good if you don't have a Fry's nearby.

That is from Fry's but shipped. I have never heard of Fry's before finding these speakers online.

Basically, the shipped price offsets sales tax in store. They are getting harder to come by...go for it. The R50s are good enough that it's not an easy decision on what you can justify when you upgrade. It's a good all rounder.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

Ron: Good point about the shipping offsetting the sales tax.

Jonboy: I gave $200 for mine and have never regretted it. As Ron pointed out, it's just a good all around speaker that (IMO) is hard to beat for the price.

I also ran mine with 2 R10's in series as the center as oshigod suggested.
