Volume on 5.1 av receiver

I have not been able to figure out why this is. I set my volume on all my speakers (surround sound mode)to watch a movie and all sounds well. However, after watching the movie I want to listen to my stereo. When I switch my AV receiver to standard stereo, the volume is so much lower coming out of the main speakersand the woofer. I need to increase the volume considerably to hear it at the same level as the surround sound setting. I have a Yamaha HTR5635 receiver with Polk Monitor30s as mains, Polk CS1 as my center and Polk R15s as my rear surrounds, the woofer is a velodyne VX10 . I would like to know if this is a problem with the receiver, or is this a normal condition.
