Looking for suggestions for an A/V receiver for under $2000. What are some favourites out there? (Looking for possible upgrade from a yam RX-V1500). Pioneer? Denon? Sherwood? Outlaw? etc...

All of those you mentioned are good receivers. Denon's & Outlaws are favorites around here. Although I don't know of anyone here that has an Outlaw receiver.
Just go with your favorite music & listen to as many as you can that have the features that you want & make sure it has preouts.
Let us know what you end up getting.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
It all depends on what features you are looking for? HDMI??
-
The Rotel RSX-1057 is under $2000.00. I would consider it an upgrade from your Yamaha. 75wpc @ 8ohm all channels driven. 2 HDMI inputs and 1 output.
Keep in mind your Yammi's power is rated with only 2 channels driven.Michael

I think the Denon and Pioneer Elites are comparable...those are both pretty decent..I have an Elite receiver from last year...I like it alot..
As far as other brands like NAD, Sherwood, Rotel or Outlaw..those may be better for the money, but it will be harder to find them in typical electonic stores...In fact, I think the Outlaw is online only..Pioneer Elite VSX-53, Polk RT800i fronts, Polk CS400i center, FX500i surround, Velodyne sub -
You could give any of these a try.

I want a thread for posts that will share "your favourite" receivers for under $2000. Just wondering what people are happy with, and are not happy with. But...an a/v receiver with HDMI upscaling and an honest wpc (above 100w) is what I'm looking for. One model I've been looking at the Pioneer ASX-84TXSI.

Blacklab.......I'm blown away with my NAD t743 if I had the money to spend on just a receiver I would go for another NAD just bigger and more options. I found the NAD very easy to set up and the manual was straight to the point and easy to understand. They kept the extra sound modes to a minimum so you dont get that, concert hall and dance club kind of settings but who uses those really anyway. You get a streamlined receiver with loads of clean power that will blow the mass market receivers away2 CHANNEL

Well, I'm currently loving my Pioneer elite VSX-74TXVi.:)
The 84 is the newer model above mine, but has a PCM low bass issue with HDMI, unless you find a model with a build date of Feb 07 or newer. This issue can also be resolved by sending the unit in for a firmware update, which is a PITA.(Recently did mine)
HDMI works wonderful between my Toshiba HD-XA1 and PS3. Don't plan on getting rid of it for a long time.
FYI, there are a ton of new HDMI 1.3 models due out this summer/fall, I'd wait this one out IMO.

Thanks for those last two replies. That is exactly the info. I'd like to get from viewers of this thread.

For the kind of money you have to spend, I would stay away from mass market brands. Just my 2 cents, but I would look at more in the lines from NAD, Anthem, Adcom, Rotel and others in that relm. I feel you get better quality and a better amp section. If (when) I had to do it over I think you would NOT see my Yamaha in my sig. I like it, but there is better to be had.Michael

What speakers are you planning to run with it? All AVR's have a different sound and work best (in my opinon) with some speakers and not others. I tend to like to end up neutral, so I blend brighter speakers with more laid back electronics or vice versa.
So - whatcha wanna run with your new AVR?

I wouldn't spend any good money on a receiver right now with the next generation of HD audio receivers coming out for silly low prices compared to receivers of yore. That's why I picked up Ben's HK 235 to hold me over until all that HD stuff comes out and irons out.Sharp Elite 70
