I gotta have floorstanders for my mains.

Thats why I really wish the LSi15 didnt have any type of sub on it.

What kind of music do you generally listen to?

How loud do you normally play music?

For music I assume you are meaning a 2 channel set up. I prefer the sound of the 9's to the 15s with a good sub that you can position optimally.

I listen to everything from Johnny Cash to NIN. not alot of rap and pop at all. I love 70's and 80 rock. I'm more for presentation than making my ears ring. I want that feeling that I'm in the recording studio with them.
I must add too that I want this for later adding for a 5 channel HT

so I'd add the LSIC and LSI7

Well for HT, floorstanders rule so for the best of both worlds LSI 15 with a sub - even for music.

but isnt having the LSi15's with their built in sub and an external sub overkill?

I'm having a learning curve but I read some awesome review about the lsi7's

No. I used to listen to music on mine and even with the passive sub they were lacking somewhat on the bottom end...IMO

Now if you want to wait a while for the sub they will be fine for the most part but definitely get a sub for HT as I am sure you know.

Get the 9's for sure over the 7's. The 9s are Polks nicest speaker.....

    IMO with plenty of power.

Sounds good. Make sure you have PLENTY of power though or you may be disappointed. I used to use a 9 as a center as well...

I'm thinking I will use my nad t743 as my preamp and find a nice 5 channel outlaw, rotel, nad or sunfire

my nad has a strong 50 watt per chan, think I can get away with a 2 chan amp for the 9's and run the center and rears off the nad?

I think that would probably be fine. The LSIC is also 4 ohms though so it would be best to maybe do a 3 channel amp with the Nad..?

Introducing a Sub in 2CH listening is always a tough job, weather you use bookshelves or floor standers. To begin with you need a really good sub which usually doesn't come cheap, and then you have to integrate it with your mains, which might be a very tough job given your rest of the equipment and room layout.

I have run LSi15 with and without a sub, and have settled on running them without a sub. I was running them with a sub when I had a Oppo DVD player as source and old Carver amp. Then I upgraded to Arcam CD player and good boost the bottom end, which was further enhanced by swapping them amp to a parasound amp. After these upgrades, 95% of music I listen to sound good and I don't miss the need for much lower extension on the bottom end.

First off have you listened to any of the LSi's set up properly, or at all? The 7's in a medium to large room need a sub and most would argue even in a small room they need a sub. The 9's in a large to very large room most likely need a sub if you crave deep bass. The LSi 15 don't need a sub, but may take some trial and error to get set-up properly to give the best bass response. This rec. is for music not HT as you stated.

I have the 9's for music in a medium sized room and the bass output is excellent. I don't want for a sub at all. As a matter of fact when people come over to hear the 9's they ask where I've hidden the sub. When I tell them I don't have one they look perplexed because they think I'm kidding.

Even the 7's, they sound like they are paired with a small sub. For their size, the bass is very good. 15's you can play music without a sub no problem, but HT is a different thing.

I skipped 9's so I can't comment on how they compare to 15's or 7's but they wasn't much difference between the 15's and 7's with a SVS PCU in my system. Some recordings do sound better with the 15's (mostly recent mid-bass heavy pop) but most recordings like 70's rock don't have much difference in them to be honest.

I've had LSi9s up front with an LSiC, a pair of LSiFx in the rear and two PSW505 subs for a couple of years now. Music, especially SACD, and home theater all sound superb. Go with the 9s.

If your room is big enough to make adequate adjustments, LSi15/no sub is my 2 channel choice. The 15s are hard enough to tweak by themselves without throwing a sub into the mix.

If you were in a small room, I would go with 7s w/sub.

Why not get more bang for your buck and get a pair of subs from the likes of SVS or HSU...? It would cost less than the floor standings and give you much better performance and more flexible placement options. A 10" SVS is just over $400 and it beats a Polk sub in every aspect...

When I first got my 9's I was pushing them with a 40WPC into 8ohms amp. Wasn't that impressed. Went to a 120WPC-8ohm amp and they started sounding wonderful. I now have a 275WPC-8ohm amp and OMG what a difference. I actually started getting good bass out of 'em. The 9's are really power hungry speakers. Many amps don't like a 4 ohm load, so make sure you get an amp with high current capacity and high headroom. I know a lot of folks don't like Carver equipment, but the M-500t really makes my 9's shine. I think you would be hard pressed to find a better speaker than the LSi-9, even at twice the price.
