I have an Onkyo TX-SR702, but I can help.
First of all, set the impedance switch on the reciever to 4 ohms, as this alleviates the strain on the receiver's output transistors. In the 6 ohm position, too much current is going through the unit and it might damage the output transistors.
Second, keep the unit cool. I have mine installed in a rack, so I have two 120mm PC cooling fans installed in the rack to keep the unit cool. Otherwise, the Onkyo starts getting very hot and heat destroys the transistors too.
What volume do you have it set at before it starts crackling? Mine is clear at around Volume 70 (or -12db), (if you have that scale).polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

starts to crackel at about -17db...I played with the impendence and set it to 4 and it started to hum..but i can try it again...can this reciever handle the RTI10s? what other settings should i play with? sometime this weekend im gonna rewire all my a/v cables see if that helps...
is there a large/small setting on the receiver? am i missing it?Marantz 1607 - Polk S60 - S35 - Emotiva XPA-3 - Polk DSWPRO550wi -
The RTi10's are quite demanding on the Onkyo receiver. I will simply admit that. There is no doubt that the RTi10's are power hungry.
Yes, there is a large/small setting on the receiver. To lighten up the load on the receiver, you can try setting your speakers all to "Small," and make sure that "Double Bass" is turned off - its automatically turned off in THX mode too.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

BigA, welcome. Don't change the impedance setting on the 804 to the lower value. What that does is to reduce the maximum voltage that the power supply section of the 804 is capable of delivering, and because of Ohm's Law, when the maximum voltage capability is reduced, so is the maximum current and power capability. The maximum power can be reduced by as much as 50%, and although this is a safety feaure that would help prevent overheating, because of the limits it places on maximum performance it shouldn't be used.
On the 804 Onkyo no longer uses the "large/small" terminology, but the same thing is accomplished by setting a speaker "full band"(same result as setting it "large") or by instead selecting a crossover frequency for it(same result as setting it "small"). Generally you should set the subwoofer Yes(assuming that you have one) and select crossover frequencies for all the speakers , which will take some of the low-bass load off the speakers and receiver and put it on to the sub and its amp, which can handle it better. -
I've had an Onkyo TX-8511, TX-SR500, and a TX-SR702; all of them overheated when set to the 6 ohm position and were connected to 4 ohm speakers.
I would try an 80Hz crossover and see if the problem still occurs. Currently I'm running full range into Definitive Technology BP10Bs (which are 4 ohm) and that is absolutely brutal on the receiver.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

did alittle testing...the right one doesnt do it at all..I hooked up a surround infinity speaker to the left and the speaker did not crackel..hooked up the polk back up and it started to do it...I played with the levels on all and only the left did it...the right polk handled the sound and didnt hear anything..but the left speaker crackeled...or cant it still be the left connection of the reciever?..
at 4 the speakers hum..so i cant switch that..Marantz 1607 - Polk S60 - S35 - Emotiva XPA-3 - Polk DSWPRO550wi -
Swap the RTi10's to the opposite channels, if the problem stays with the same speaker, you more than likely have a damaged speaker.

swapped the channels and the left one is doing the same thing..so i guess we can eliminate the reciever...its either the tweet or mid..Marantz 1607 - Polk S60 - S35 - Emotiva XPA-3 - Polk DSWPRO550wi

upon further review...seems like the right is doing it also..when i play with the levels its starts to do it...now im really confused..when i plugged in the smaller speaker it wasnt doing it..what now??!!Marantz 1607 - Polk S60 - S35 - Emotiva XPA-3 - Polk DSWPRO550wi

I'll get back to u guys after I rewire all my components. Im gonna plug in my ps3 and dvd through the hdmi and eliminate 2 digital cables..until next time:mad:
also it also buzzes once in awhile...and all of a sudden i hear something switching in the receiver and it starts to hum ? maybe it is receiver..
update--played a dvd (joe bonamassa blues) and i cant even get it to -25 before it starts crackling really bad..maybe a bad optical cause all this?Marantz 1607 - Polk S60 - S35 - Emotiva XPA-3 - Polk DSWPRO550wi -
You should hear 2-3 clicks when the receiver is turned on, but you shouldn't hear the receiver switching unless you are changing sources/sound modes/settings, e.g. from PCM to DTS or ProLogic II to Stereo, etc.
Is -25db on the TX-SR804 equal to 58 in the "Absolute" volume setting? -12 is where my unit starts to distort.polkaudio RT35 Bookshelves

I have a 804 and using only as 2 channel. Music 80% and movies 20%. Have a pair of LSI 7s and AV set to 4 0hms. Now,Onkyo claims the 804 is 4 ohm capable at Dynamic Power 180 W/Ch. Question is what does that mean,180 watts per channel @ 4 ohms. Should I get a amp for the LSI 7s. The onkyo and 7's do sound great together, but I don't want to ruin the AVR or LSI 7s if they're not compatible. Please be kind. Thanks

Welcome Dexter. Keep an eye on the volume & check the heat of the Onkyo after extended usage. Make sure it is well ventilated. But it would be best if you started shopping for a separate amp of at least 200wpc.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2
