Audio/Video anomaly

Just switching from Audiogon to Videogon, and being to lazy to type the whole thing so I 'swiped' the 'audi' to replace with 'vide', and something just struck me as being a little strange. I'm sure there's a logical explanation, however, I'm too lazy to research it so instead I decided I'd rather look stupid here
I found it funny that 'audio' is spelled with an 'io' but 'video' is spelled with an 'eo'. Why not audio/vidio or audeo/video?

Not to suck the fun out of this discussion, but....

    audio:
"sound, especially recorded or transmitted," 1934, abstracted from prefix audio- (in audio-frequency, 1919, etc.), from L. audire "hear" (see audience). First used in Eng. as a prefix 1913; audiophile first attested 1951.

    video:
1935, as visual equivalent of audio, from L. video "I see," first person singular present indicative of videre "to see" (see vision). Videotape (n.) is from 1953; the verb is 1959, from the noun; videocassette is from 1971; video game is from 1973. Videocassette recorder is from 1971, now usually VCR (also 1971).

So, it all comes from Latin.

How about this, why is a "w" a double "u" and not a double "v" ie. double U "UU" vs. double V "VV". A "W" looks more like a double "V" to me.

...and why is a V pronounce like a W and vice versa in German?

Well in French it is a "double V", it is pronounced due-ble-veigh (rhymes with weigh).
