I've owned my SRS2.3TL for 5 years no problems. . .I love them!!!! Tonight I was watching "Deja vu" and man there was this loud crackling sound coming from my left speaker. Speaker sounded like it was coming apart, but it would only happen during particualr scenes. Any suggestions??

    Hi Alan,

    Welcome to Club Polk!

crackling sounds I have no idea.. sometimes at certain frequencies.. people have reported that that the mid bass drivers will "pop" loudly.. not sure why it does that. I have never had that happen to my SRS drivers.. but other people have.

Has it done this ever before?

Could be something as simple as some of the hookup wires inside having dropped down and are rattling against the back of the passive radiator. Take it off and check inside to see if anything's come loose.

My old reciever used to make loud crackling sounds with my CRS+'s. from what I gathered it happened when the reciever started to clip. Are you driving your system too hard?

I'm using a Sony STR DA3ES I think it pumps like 90-100 watts per channel & yeah I push it pretty hard. I always thought my fronts could handle it. Am I wrong??

Clipping very well could be the problem. When I push my 1Cs, the VU meters on my Carver can show peaks of greater than 150 watts. Your 2.3s probably need more power to play loud.

It's not your speakers, the problem is your AVR doesn't have enough juice, clips and the result your hear thru the speakers. Turn it down before you permanently damage both pieces.

WOW now that you guys say that things make sense to me. That clipping seems to happen only during curtain scenes of differant movies. Thatnks for the heads up....... What amp should I use to pump those bad boys??

You don't have an amp, you have an AVR. Most AVR's aren't going to do your SDA's justice. However, you can add an amp to your AVR thru the pre outs and that should help the SDA's quite a bit.

I assume the 2.3 are the front L&R speakers. If you are on a budget, I would get yourself a *GOOD* 2 channel amp (assuming you have front L&R preouts on your AVR) and drive the 2.3s with this instead of the AVR amp. You can pick up a good used NAD or Adcom for $200-$500 and bring it along to whatever system you might move to later.

The surround speakers can still use the Sony HT amp.

Maybe turn the bass down, too. Or buy a sub (if you don't have one) and back off the bass from the 2.3.

Any suggestions where to buy these? Right now I'm on a budget b/s all my money is going towards my Sony Pearl & screen.

you are overdriving the reciver into clipping and bottoming out the speakers on the voice coil's. when you do that you get a popping sound. get more power, its that simple

I suggest at least 200 watts a channel for the 2.3's

Thanks guys!! I'm really glad I found this forum. I will be working overtime this week to get the amps I need. Until then I will watch movies at a low level.

Keep an eye on ebay and go to the manufacture web sites for specfic info. Adcom and NAD don't fudge their power ratings. Most of the circuit city type equipment does. Personally, I think Adcom and NAD are a good sweet spot that will start to get you into the quality you want.

What about "OutLaw" audios 200 watt stackables? They sell for about 325 each.

The Outlaw will work, they are a bit different kind of amplifier though check it out, I would forget the Sony, no TV needed for 2-channel music nirvana.

OK get the TV if you must. Just be careful I believe you physically hard clipped the drivers in the SDA, a very nasty thing.

if you're going carver, start with a tfm 35 and work your way up the food chain,a 45 would be even nicer,a Belles 350a reference would be better,or your larger parasounds',or an Anthem tube hybird, just my .02 worth, have fun:)

That's the pro version of the M1.5t and I think those specs are inflated (maybe), though the guy/gals at CCR did tell me that it would work in my application. george is right, anything from the TFM 35 up has plenty of balls to run the SDAs.
